Bob Barker wasn’t the only news on WWE RAW last night. WWE superstar Batista will be returning to WWE RAW next week. Batista is scheduled to make a career altering announcement. Speculation is running rampant from a WWE WrestleMania challenge to retirement. My guess is that we are all setting ourselves up for a big pro wrestling disappointment.
I can’t remember the last time a pro wrestling surprise delivered. Every time TNA Wrestling or the WWE teases a surprise, the fans start going nuts. Names like Goldberg, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, N.W.O., The Rock, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin start getting thrown around. Unfortunately none of those names have ever been delivered so why do fans keep falling for it?
This is why I hate the pro wrestling surprise. There is no way that these surprises can ever deliver. Obviously Batista isn’t coming back next week to announce his retirement. Sure, he may come out on WWE RAW and make the announcement. Yet, we all know that isn’t the case. So what could he possibly say or do that will satisfy our expectations for the big surprise? I don’t think there is anything.
TNA Wrestling may be the worst of the worst in the current era of pro wrestling. TNA Wrestling promotes surprises virtually every week. For one thing, most of their core audience already knows what this surprise is due to spoilers. Secondly, TNA Wrestling rarely ever pays off on the surprise when they say they will. It should be no surprise (no pun intended) that the architect of many of those failed WCW surprises is running the show in TNA Wrestling today.
