One of the most grounded celebrities, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry has achieved yet another feat. The achievement has been marked under the commendable humanitarian work the couple has done. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex received the NAACP President’s Award on Saturday night for their work with World Central Kitchen.
The work was done by the couple to support a Texas women’s shelter, promote vaccine equity, and establish community relief centers. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are renowned for doing charitable work for years. The couple engages in multiple public welfare work and is admired by the masses for their selfless work.
US civil rights group National Association for the Advancement of Colored People honored the couple on Saturday presenting them a civil rights award. The award conferred to the Duke and Duchess is an annual award. Every year, the NAACP president’s award is given in honor of outstanding achievement and public service.
Muhammad Ali, LeBron James, Rihanna, Jay-Z, and Lauryn Hill have all won it in the past. Various other political leaders like Rev. Jesse Jackson, Colin Powell, and Condoleezza Rice have been the recipient of the award. The news of the award broke in when a message was shared on the official Twitter handle of the NAACP award.
In a social media post, the NAACP Image Awards, tweeted: “Congratulations to our President’s Award recipients Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. #NAACPImageAwards.” Wishes and congratulations were poured all over social media. Netizens congratulated the couple on their enormous achievement.
“It’s amazing to think about the legacy of the Image Awards, which began shortly after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were passed into law,” the Duchess of Sussex said as she took the stage to accept the prize. She further expressed herself saying “Today, we can build on that legacy by restoring federal voting protections in our country and carrying on the work of civil rights legends like the late John Lewis.
To be in the presence of so many outstanding winners humbles us tremendously.” The award involves the hooping cash prize of $100,000 to be invested in social justice and humanitarian work through technological development. Various other awards were also presented at the ceremony.
Prince Harry began his thanking speech by mentioning Ukraine and its people. He said that the people of Ukraine are the ones who genuinely need our support. Amid the rising Russia-Ukraine crisis, hundreds of people and soldiers have been killed from both countries. This has to lead to the wastage of human resources.
Mary J Blige will perform, and Issa Rae, Kerry Washington, LL Cool J, Michael Strahan, Morgan Freeman, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Paula Patton, Questlove, Samuel L Jackson, Simu Liu, Tiffany Haddish, and Zendaya will all make appearances at the NAACP awards ceremony. The show will be broadcast on BET in the United States on Saturday night.
