Stanley Cup Game 1 Preview: Philadelphia Flyers vs. Chicago Blackhawks

Chicago BlackhawksLet’s cut right to the sports betting chase when it comes to the Stanley Cup finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Stanley Cup betting odds on the Blackhawks winning are -200, and the odds on the Flyers winning the Cup are +170. What does that mean? Well in NHL betting terms it means that the experts pick the Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

There is no denying that the Philadelphia Flyers have momentum on their side. They got into the playoffs when Brian Boucher stopped the last shooter in a shoot out on the last shot in the last game of the season. If the Flyers lose that last game of the season to the Rangers, even in a shoot out, they do not make the playoffs.

All season long the Flyers have fought with injuries, a lack of scoring and a defense that is just too slow. But somehow, some way, they slipped into the playoffs. Then they took out the New Jersey Devils in five games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Amazing, right? Not really. Martin Brodeur is finally showing his age, and the Devils no longer have veterans like Scott Gomez and John Madden to help them score in critical games. The Devils are a shell of what they once were, and the Flyers took advantage of that.

Then the Flyers went down three games to zero against the Bruins, and fought back to win the series. Amazing? Not really. The Bruins have a slow defense, a lack of quality scoring forwards and a rookie goalie that fell apart in the critical stretch of the playoffs.

After the Bruins the Flyers took out the upstart Canadiens in five games in the Eastern Conference finals. Amazing? Not really. The Canadiens were skating on thin ice with a goalie that takes way too many chances, and a defense that fell apart in the Conference finals.

So as the World Cup betting heats up the amazing Flyers meet the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals. Amazing? Not really. The Flyers were the number seven seed in the Eastern Conference, and the complete collapse of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference in the playoffs suggests that the East has a lot of work to do before they can expect another Stanley Cup.

The Chicago Blackhawks were the number two seed in the West, and only missed being the number one seed by two points. They swept the Sharks in the Western Conference finals, and did so in convincing fashion. Amazing? Not really. The Blackhawks were a 12 to 1 favorite to win the Stanley Cup when the season opened. What were the two teams that had better odds? The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals; two Eastern Conference teams that looked increasingly weaker as the playoffs wore on.

In game one of the Stanley Cup finals Antti Niemi and the Chicago Blackhawks will set a pace that will ring throughout the series. The Blackhawks will skate circles around the Flyers, and players like Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith and forward Jonathan Toews will show that talent will win over grit pretty much most of the time.

Pick: Chicago Blackhawks 4-1
