Before I begin rambling on why I am not ordering WrestleMania, I want to take a minute or two to explain something to everyone reading this. I am a fan of wrestling. I love it. I love watching it, reading about it and writing about it. My love for wrestling inspired me write columns for the likes of CCB and WrestleChat.Net.
But no matter how bad the product us, there is always one part of the year that I eagerly anticipate watching wrestling. You know what I’m talking about here; the Road to WrestleMania. That’s when the stories evolve for the build up to the largest event wrestling has ever seen and will likely ever see. After the Royal Rumble, you know it’s time to start getting excited for WrestleMania. It’s more than an event, it’s a spectacle, a global phenomenon.
This is not the case this year. I did not enjoy the stories and I don’t expect to see any 5-star matches neither.
The Rock vs. John Cena/Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H/The Undertaker vs. CM Punk
Those are the top 3 matches on the card, the feuds that will sell WrestleMania 29. First, all of these matches have taken place already. Four out of the six wrestlers are part timers. John Cena’s final promo on Raw was downright awful in my opinion. Same as The Rock’s. I honestly felt like they didn’t give a crap about the story. Cena is being built up as an underdog which is hilarious in my opinion. He lost ONE match and since defeated Brock Lesnar and won the Royal Rumble. I felt like they were there just doing their job. I didn’t feel any passion or emotion from them. It felt like they didn’t care, so I said to myself, if they don’t care, why should I? The match is not going to top last years. John Cena is not going to turn heel and The Rock will probably win and drop the title to Brock Lesnar at extreme rules.
Brock Lesnar and Triple H had a great match at SummerSlam and I understand why they’re wrestling (or should I say fighting) at WrestleMania from a storyline point of view and from a marketing point of view. Casual fans are interested in this match and probably haven’t been following WWE that much since SummerSlam or the Royal Rumble, so a rematch between these two will interest them and encourage them to pay for WrestleMania. I expect Triple H to win. I can see HBK being a major part of this match. Either by helping Triple H or costing him the match thus setting up a match at WrestleMania 30. It would make a good story. It would be the only time HBK turned on Triple H too. Or this will happen: Lesnar beats the holy living shit out of HBK and Triple H, Batista comes out and saves the day. But that’s not going to happen this Sunday. IF Batista returns, it will be after WrestleMania to cure the WrestleMania hangover. I can’t see this match topping SummerSlam neither.
The Undertaker vs. CM Punk does interest me. However it doesn’t interest me enough the cost WrestleMania is to see it. No way in hell. The feud has disappointed me in ONE way: why on earth haven we not seen a PIPEBOMB!? CM Punk is the best talker in pro wrestling and didn’t use one of his famous pipebombs. It’s a little disappointing. He pipebombed John Cena and The Rock so why not the Undertaker? Again, its a case of the story not being wrote properly. All three matches had great potential but I don’t think much effort went into them.
Chris Jericho vs. Fandango
Fandango is a good gimmick. People forget that gimmicks is what WWE is all about. It has been like that since the 80s. The gimmick isn’t the thing bothering me. The match isn’t bothering me. I know Johnny Curtis is a great wrestler, as is Jericho, but I know they aren’t going to get much time. I’m guessing they will get 8-12 minutes to perform. I just don’t see this match being any good to be honest.
Ryback vs. Mark Henry
I want to see Ryback hit the shell shock on Henry. That will create a cool moment and that’s going to happen. Other than that, I don’t really care about this match. Ryback will probably win and it will be Mark Henry’s final match (I’m guessing).
The Tag Titles Match/Sheamus, Big Show and Randy Orton vs. The Shield/Brodus Clay, Tensai, Cameron and Naomi vs. Cody Rhodes, Rhodes Scholars and The Bella Twins
I care about these matches as much as Kim Jong Un cares about world peace.
I have a lot more I could say about this years WrestleMania but I think my point has been made clear. What I want to know is, do you feel the same way? One thing I will say is though my goodness, WWE really know how to promote and market themselves. The build up this year has been awful yet the majority of fans are still willing to spend 70 bucks on it and there is a huge buzz around the internet for it. You can reply to me and say they won’t be getting that much off me, I’m going to a sports-bar and it costs just 5 bucks to get in. But they still have you as a customer. Do you know how much it costs bars to show WrestleMania? I don’t actually know but fuck me, it’s pretty expensive I imagine.
Thanks for reading people, make sure you let me know your thoughts!
