Remember that Nick Diaz retirement? To the shock of nobody, Diaz’s retirement plans have changed. Not only does Nick Diaz want to fight again but he is calling out the biggest dog in the UFC yard. Nick Diaz wants Anderson Silva!
“This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back to the cage. Nick Diaz will return.
To address the NSAC suspension, I will say that we have appealed to the courts and if things go our way, it will be plausible that Nick could return as early as sometime at the end of this year.
He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge.
Silva’s camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catch weight. Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.
I will be meeting with Dana next Monday August 6th to discuss this and other issues. If you appreciate Nick’s fighting style, please let Dana know that you want Nick back ASAP.”
The first bit about Diaz appealing the NSAC suspension is just rhetoric at this point. It’s over Gracie. While I do think that the Diaz camp did point out holes in the suspension during their hearing, the results never changed. Nick was caught with a positive test for marijuana metabolites and he has to face the music. That isn’t likely to change no matter how much the MMA world misses watching Diaz in the octagon.
Now let’s get to the fun part of Gracie’s statement. Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz! I don’t think that fight was on anyone’s radar. That is exactly the answer Dana White and the UFC have been looking for when it comes to Anderson’s next money fight. Diaz is even talking about a catchweight fight which would nullify any arguments about Nick not deserving a title shot. This could be a huge fight and exactly the kind of test that the UFC would love to throw at the Spider.
Unfortunately it is not that easy. The UFC would be putting the GSP-Diaz fight at great risk here. If Silva makes quick work out of Diaz, the bloom comes off the rose of the grudge fight with GSP. On the flip side, the UFC is once again tying up the middleweight division. That is the problem when Anderson moves up in weight. Since Silva only fights about once a year, that is a whole year or close that the division is put on hold. Quite frankly giving Diaz the title shot would probably be the best way to go in spicing up the division.
What about Anderson Silva? Would he take the fight? I am a big Silva fan but he comes off a bit like a bully by continuing to call out GSP but refusing to take a fight against Jon Jones. Silva would have a huge weight advantage over GSP, so much that it almost takes the fun out of the fight. It is a very bully move to call out the little guy while absolutely refusing to take a fight with the big dog in a division you have already fought in. That said, Silva would have a huge size advantage over Diaz and would probably take the fight.
My hunch is that Dana White is licking his chops at the idea of a Silva vs. Diaz fight and if Silva accepts, this fight is signed on August 7.
