Improvements All Around In NFC North Where Vikings Still Top Dogs

Brett Favre and Aaron RogersIt is hard to remember a betting on sports season where the NFC North was talked about without the bulk of the focus being on quarterback Brett Favre, and his seemingly endless battle with whether or not it is finally time for him to leave the game.

While the Green Bay Packers finally seemed like they had moved past the issue as a team during their run to the playoffs a year ago, his presence in Minnesota was the missing piece the Vikings needed to emerge as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Favre and the Vikings made it all the way to the NFC Championship game, where they fell one step short of their ultimate goal. The offense thrived under their new pivot, with youngsters Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin playing to their potential under the ageless wonder, and Adrian Peterson thriving under the new space an improving passing game created. Kevin and Pat Williams remain the glue on defense, sucking up opponents’ running games while Kevin chips in with defensive end Jared Allen to apply pressure on quarterbacks. All indications have Favre returning for at least one more season to complete his NFL betting goal of reaching the Super Bowl, and if he does there is no reason not to believe that the Vikings will once again emerge as NFC North champions.

Challenging them for the top spot will be Favre’s old team, now led by Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers finally reached his potential in leading one of the top offenses in the league a year ago, and if not for a face mask call that wasn’t made in the Packers’ playoff loss to the Arizona Cardinals, who knows how far Green Bay would have been able to make it. Rodgers has a plethora of weapons around him, which have helped him create, including wide receiver Greg Jennings who is one of the most dangerous in the betting on NFL game. The switch to the 3-4 worked wonders for the defense, whose talent and skills better suited the system than the 4-3 they used the year before. Another year learning how the 3-4 works should have Green Bay competing for a Wild Card spot once more.

The online sports betting unknowns this season are the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. After disappointing seasons both made changes to their rosters that project improvement, but will be in tough to challenge the top dogs in the NFC North. With Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers now on board, Chicago will expect a big improvement from franchise quarterback Jay Cutler, who they pinned their hopes on a year ago when they traded away a King’s ransom to acquire him. The Detroit Lions made progress by simply winning a game a year ago, but it was more than that in Michigan with rookie quarterback Matt Stafford showing the potential that made him a top selection. Both the Lions and Bears should be improved in 2010-11, but it is difficult to predict them making noise in a crowded NFC North.
