Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s UK Passport Restored, MP Claims

Iranian-British woman Nazanin Zaghari- Ratcliffe who has been a detainee by the Iranian government has had her UK passport returned. Naznin had been detained by the Iranian government for the past three years since 2016. Zaghari who is 43 years old was arrested while she was taking her daughter to meet her family.

She was charged with planning to destabilize the Iranian government, which she denied. Mrs. Zaghari-Ratcliffe was still in her family’s house in Tehran, according to Tulip Siddiq. “Delicate negotiations are taking place,” Boris Johnson remarked. Ms. Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn, confirmed that British negotiators had arrived in Tehran.

Although Nazanin’s sentence ended in March 2021 as she was sentenced to 3 years of jail instead of proven guilty for the alleged crime. But she further faced a new set of charges and was subsequently sentenced to one more year of imprisonment. Nazanin was also released during the COVID pandemic time.

“I am extremely glad to report that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been given her British passport back,” the Hampstead and Kilburn MP tweeted. She is still in Tehran, where she lives with her family. I’ve also heard that a British negotiation team is now in Tehran. I’ll keep publishing updates as they come in.” According to reports, the UK government has paid Iran a £400 million debt that dates back decades, a move that might speed up Zaghari-and Ratcliffe’s Anoosheh Ashoori’s release from Tehran.

The plausible release of Nazanin can also be proven as a way to mend international relations. Although there is little evidence on whether the debt has been actually paid or not but still paying the same would be beneficial for both countries. This could ease the anger between the two countries as it was also the major source of the tension.

Several previous negotiations have collapsed, and the official government stance has been that the UK owed money to Iran but was unable to pay it because of US economic sanctions. The British Foreign Office has declined to call Zaghari-Ratcliffe a state captive, which has enraged her family and legal team.

To a question about whether the debt had been paid, the Foreign Office said: “We will not comment more while conversations are underway. Detained British people in Iran have long been a priority. We don’t comment on rumors.” “One of the most encouraging milestones in the six years she has been removed from us,” said Rebecca Ratcliffe, Zaghari-sister-in-law. Ratcliffe’s It’s great that a negotiation team is out there now.” That she was called to visit the Islamic revolutionary guard corps on Monday.

After conversations with Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denied the US claims that Moscow is impeding attempts to resuscitate the Iran nuclear deal. A stalemate in the Iran nuclear talks might affect the release of dual nationals. Nazanin is also well known for organizing hunger strikes and movements against her arrest. She was backed by United Nations.
