Move Over WWE Divas: A New Womens Era is Born

Sunday night at WrestleMania 32 is in the history books and was a history maker no doubt.  And for the ladies of the WWE, it was a staggering change.  Before the event aired, WWE Hall of Famer Lita announced that the Divas Championship would be retired and a new WWE Women’s Championship would be awarded to the winner of the Divas Triple Threat match later on that night.

Charlotte ended up closing out the Diva era and taking charge as the first WWE Women’s Champion of the new era.  But the three women in the match delivered Sunday night in what many is calling the match of the night.  Charlotte, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch stole the show in what was a monumental moment for women’s wrestling.  I don’t think that’s ever happened at a WrestleMania.

It was deserved and the undertaking was long time coming; five years ago I don’t think anyone could have predicted such a change.  Even Banks stated what fans were thinking- that the Divas matches were bathroom breaks for a long time.  That’s enough to want to make a change and take notice.

Mick Foley was extremely vocal, starting the conversation and presented the idea of fans wanting a change in women’s wrestling as a whole.  Former WWE Diva AJ Lee has spoken in the past on wanting to change the direction the WWE Divas Division was going in.  Then, there was the “Give Divas a Chance” movement a couple of years back.  It was almost as if everyone came together to make this happen.  Yea, this was a long time coming, and that change didn’t generate as much noise until Sunday night.  And it couldn’t have come at a better time.

I can safely say that dreading a women’s match is not the case anymore, and that fact has been known for a while.

Each woman got her WrestleMania moment, and many of us were reminded of why these three women are so good in the first place.  WWE allowed these women the opportunity of a lifetime and they did not waste it.  Sunday night’s match indicated that WWE is more than ready to transition to a new phase in their now Women’s division.  Charlotte, Banks and Lynch are the front runners of this new era and honestly, they are the right ones to headline it.

Even though Bayley didn’t make a main roster debut, there is still a lot of buzz surrounding the Women’s Division.  Either way, things are looking real good for the women superstars of WWE.  That goes for all the ladies that occupy the roster.

In my blog last week, I stated that there was a change to come.  With the Women’s Championship announcement, I knew I was right.  Add to the fact that the ten Diva tag match was bumped to the kick off show, there is no doubt that WWE is ready to take full advantage of the Divas Revolution that it created last summer.

WWE gave the Divas a chance and now they have transcended into women superstars.  Sunday night, the stage belonged to Charlotte, Banks and Lynch in a well-deserved spot on the biggest WrestleMania WWE has produced.  Now, they’re no longer the new kids on the block.  They’re the best in their class, and their work speaks for themselves.  The ladies steamrolled in, did it with flair, and now fans are banking on it.
