This Sunday, August 14, 2011 will be WWE’s annual summer event, also known as “the Biggest Party of the Summer,” also known as one of the “big 4” PPVs, Summerslam. After Wrestlemania, I would say it is their third biggest PPV, as the Royal Rumble PPV is number two in my eyes. This year’s edition, as of now, only has four matches announced. I haven’t been totally thrilled with the buildup, but in this blog, I will give my predictions for Sunday.
Sheamus vs Mark Henry
Mark Henry, for the millionth time, has been given a huge push. He is being portrayed as this unstoppable monster. As WWE viewers know by now, he has put the Big Show, and Kane on the shelf for the time being. His latest victim was Koslov, and we all know why that was done. Lately, WWE has started to build Sheamus as a baby face. After all, Smackdown needs more top babyfaces besides Randy Orton. I have liked Sheamus for quite awhile. I am willing to give this baby face turn a shot. PREDICTION: To keep the feud going, either Sheamus wins by DQ, or match ends in double countout.
I thought Beth Phoenix disappeared honestly. I had not seen her for months, it seemed on WWE. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago on Raw, there was a battle royal, and Beth won by putting both of the Bella Twins on her shoulders and dumped them both over the top rope. Kelly Kelly who was on commentary, went in to congratulate Beth, and Beth just whooped Kelly Kelly into next week, and cut a promo, and turned heel. This past week on Raw, after a match, Beth was on the ramp, and Kelly Kelly ran in and hit her from behind with the belt, and helped Eve Torres who Beth had attacked post match. There isn’t much to discuss about this match. PREDICTION: Beth defeats Kelly Kelly for the title.
World Heavyweight Championship Match: No Disqualification Match: Christian (c) vs Randy Orton
If there are a couple of great things that have come out of that sad day on April 11, 2011 when Edge came out on Raw and sadly announced his retirement, it is the awesome feud between Randy Orton and Christian, and the great matches they are having. I honestly think the feud between Christian vs Randy Orton is THE BEST FEUD going on right now in WWE. Yes, I said it. From when Christian got the belt at Extreme Rules with Edge supporting him only to lose it to Orton 5 days later with fans online (myself included) getting all angry, and having it all lead up to Christian turn into this heel. Randy Orton was no slouch either. He loses the title, and it brings out his nasty temper. I am just loving all this. I realize this feud has gone on a long time, but I have been longing for the times where feuds lasted more than 2 PPVs.
I mean the two work great together. Their promos and their work in the ring just bring the best out of each other, in my opinion. I have seen all their PPV matches, and not one of them is below 3 3/4 stars in my opinion. I just love this feud, and for some reason, I don’t think it stops here. PREDICTION: Christian retains
WWE Championship Match: Champion vs Champion: CM Punk (c) vs John Cena (c) HHH (sp. Ref)
This is the Main Event of the PPV. This match is supposed to decide the “real champion.” Of course, I had a sneaking suspicion they were heading in that direction when Punk won the Belt in that excellent WWE Championship match he had with Cena at Money In the Bank where he took the belt. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that WWE on Raw the next night was going to have a tournament for the “new” WWE Championship Belt that Cena would win, and at Summerslam there would be a Championship vs Championship match at Summerslam.
However, what irked me about the angle which started out great, was that John Cena won the tournament like I figured, but he didn’t even take part in the tournament. Rey Mysterio was the won who busted his tail, and went through the tournament, and won it. John Cena did what a HEEL would do…….take advantage of a man who had gone through hell, and beat him for the belt. I could see if a HEEL did that, but the top baby face of the company?? Of course, after Punk returned, you had the WWE Universe in that poll saying that Cena was the rightful championship. I mean really. What PPV were they watching??
Those are my predictions. I am not so sure the buyrate will beat last year’s. I haven’t been sold on the build up lately. However, I hope it is a great show, and no major injuries. Hope everyone enjoys the PPV.
