What Happened?

On Saturday, a gunman donning military gear including body armor and a tactical helmet and heavily armed first shot 4 people in the parking lot of a Tops Supermarket at 2:30 pm which caused 3 fatalities. He then proceeded to enter the supermarket where he got in a gunfight with the security guard who was a retired Buffalo police officer.

The guard managed to get a shot but the gunman was unharmed because of the armor. The gunman then opened fire on 9 people inside the store according to the police. The gunman reportedly live-streamed the whole fiasco on social media and it was also found that the guns he was carrying had the names of previous mass shooters and racists etched into them.

After the police arrived, the gunman reportedly first pointed the gun at himself threatening to kill himself but after the police talked him down, the suspect surrendered and took off his tactical gear.

The Suspect

According to the authorities, the crime was racially motivated and carried out by a white teenager who fired approximately 50 shots in total. As of now, an 18-year-old suspected to be the gunman has been apprehended but is pleading not guilty.

However, after his arrest, the suspect made several disturbing statements that describe his motive behind the mass shooting. From his statements, it was deduced that the shooting was because of the hate towards the black community and the shooter studied previous mass attacks before committing the crime.

Among the people the gunman shot, 11 of the people shot were black and three white people who were shot suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is named Payton Gendron and is charged with first-degree murder.

President’s Statement

Joe Biden, the president of the USA issued a statement grieving the loss of life and condemning the crime that occurred. He and the first lady will be visiting Buffalo.

The statement said: “A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation. Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. Hate must have no safe harbor. We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.”

This incident is bound to go down as one of the deadliest racist massacres in America’s recent history.
