Kurt Angle Arrested in North Dakota…Oh It’s True!

Kurt AngleI was a bit surprised when I received an email last night from TMZ.com reporting that Kurt Angle was arrested. The TNA Wrestling star and former Olympic gold medalist was arrested for being drunk in a car. Angle was charged with being behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated in North Dakota.

The Associated Press reports, “Highway Patrol Capt. Kevin Robson told the Grand Forks Herald that 42-year-old Kurt Angle failed a field sobriety test and was arrested. The charge is actual physical control, which means he’s not accused of drunken driving but of being behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated.”

Angle took to Twitter to immediately tell his side of the story. In a serious of tweets Angle wrote…

“Thank U to my supporters. I was not drunk. I was in ice storm and my car slid into 3 ft of snow median. I called police 4 help. They had – @AngleFoods1

Other plans. I was stucl and wanted to go to my hotel. I was not passed out Drunk. I was co-herent. I’m sorry if I let you down. Don’t – @AngleFoods1

Believe everything You read. My life is good and this is a speed bump in the road. The truth will come out. GOD Bless. I take responsibility – @AngleFoods1

For this. My job is to stay clean and never put myself in jeopardy. TMZ blew it out of proportion. After my Hearings, I will give You proper – @AngleFoods1

Story. GOD Bless. Kurt Angle. I Love You all” – @AngleFoods1

Let me be clear and say that Kurt Angle was not arrested for a DUI. Angle was arrested because the police officers smelled alcohol on him after he was found passed out in a car. Yes it is illegal to sleep in a car if you are drunk. How serious is this? Well for anyone else I’d call it a major misstep. For Kurt Angle, I’d characterize it as either terribly bad luck or just plain stupid.

The timing couldn’t be worse. TNA Wrestling is currently under attack by the wrestling media for allowing an allegedly inebriated Jeff Hardy to wrestle Sting at Victory Road. To date TNA Wrestling has not fired Jeff Hardy nor are there any reports of Hardy entering rehab. To say that the company could use a really good publicist right now may be the understatement of the year.

Angle has been arrested twice since signing with TNA Wrestling. Angle was indeed charged with a DUI in 2007 but later cleared of any wrongdoing and beat all of the charges. Angle was later arrested in 2009 for stalking his girlfriend and being in possession of HGH and needles. Once again Angle beat those charges. Once again let me perfectly clear and say that Angle has beaten all of those charges so it is hard to hold them against him, although most still will.

Angle was in North Dakota last night for a TNA Wrestling house show. Angle did make the house show and indeed wrestled Jeff Jarrett later that night. I know that TNA Wrestling will get a lot of criticism for letting him wrestle but I am on their side in this case. Angle is technically innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. I think the fair thing to do here is to give Angle his day in court to tell his story and let a judge decide whether he is telling the truth or not before he receives any company punishment.

Angle was TNA champion when he was arrested in 2009 for the stalking charges. Wrestling fans and media were outraged when the company continued to promote him as champion after being arrested. I had no problem at the time with him wrestling but it was a dicey situation since TNA did employ his girlfriend who made all kinds of crazy accusations against Angle. The company backed Angle and I would expect nothing less. Like it or not, he has a track record of being 2-0 in protesting his innocence after being arrested.

Angle was released after posting a $300 bond.
