According to numerous reports, John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio will headline SummerSlam 2011. The match will likely be the first in what will wind up being a very lengthy feud that could take them all the way through the Royal Rumble. The match gives Cena a fresh opponent and Del Rio fans some new hope that their Mexican hero will get some WWE gold after all.
It appeared that Del Rio was on his way to gold with his 2011 Royal Rumble win. He was certainly positioned pre-Rumble as the obvious winner. I don’t think many people bet against Del Rio at WrestleMania with the amount of momentum he had following the Rumble. Unfortunately for a lot of fans hoping to see Alberto win the title, he left empty handed. Yet I think it is impressive that while he continually lost big matches to Edge and Christian over the last few months he remained a strong heel.
John Cena desperately needs to get out of this feud with The Miz. I know a lot of people love The Miz, but the feud isn’t working. Nobody believes that The Miz has a chance of beating Cena, nor has Cena really done a lot to help get Miz over. Cena no-sold The Miz as a fluke champion in the weeks leading into WrestleMania to the point that even though The Miz won, nobody takes him seriously. I think The Miz has great potential, but it will be with someone other than Cena.
This will not be the first Cena vs. Del Rio match in the WWE, although their previous one will probably be erased from history ala: Triple H vs. The Undertaker WrestleMania 17. Cena and Del Rio headlined a WWE RAW broadcast on March 14 leading into WrestleMania. Believe it or not the first time encounter was a disaster in the ratings. The match lost over 200,000 viewers in the first fifteen minutes which is unheard of for a Cena match. I can’t tell you why, but it did. Quite frankly I am a little surprised that the WWE is moving forward with the Cena-Del Rio feud after the disappointing ratings for their first match.
Dave Meltzer reports that Rey Mysterio vs. R-Truth is also in the WWE’s SummerSlam plans. With John Morrison injured and only expected out six weeks maximum, an R-Truth vs. Morrison match at SummerSlam seemed like a given. This tells me that either John Morrison is expected out much longer than reported or that he has permanently lost his spot to Rey Mysterio.
Those are the only reported matches although there are some other rumors floating around. I have heard that a Triple H vs. The Undertaker WrestleMania 27 rematch may wind up on SummerSlam depending upon the health of The Undertaker. At one point that match was penciled in for SummerSlam, but that all depends upon The Undertaker’s status. I have heard and read mixed reports on his status with some saying he is out until WrestleMania 28 and others saying he will be back by SummerSlam.
SummerSlam 2011 takes place August 11 in Los Angeles, CA.
