It may have been the greatest statement Daniel Bryan has made regarding this upcoming match for the WWE Title.
And in my estimation, it won’t be Bryan. In this “Bryan and the WWE Universe Against the World” attitude of the American Dragon, I honestly think it could lead to a possible character tweek by John Cena.
Yes, you heard me say that.
Honestly, I have grown a little tired of the back and forth between Cena and Bryan and the niceness that has been going on. The fact we see them on the Divas show and the fact we know more about the two and their relationship with the Bellas than we do about the wrestling. It is almost as if McMahon is selling this match because of his investment in a reality television show.
Can’t two wrestlers of this magnitude and ability do this on their own?
I have always been leery of these kinds of matches where extra-curricular activity is involved. The promotion of a movie (Zeus/Hulk Hogan) or television show is an awful way to promote the second biggest pay-per-view event in the WW
E. And frankly, the company is blowing this golden opportunity.
I have said for years, even before writing on the Internet, great matches and feuds are best promoted by the competitors or a manager. I also know the WWE may or not want this because McMahon is worried about putting the strap on a wrestler who is 5’8” and 210 pounds with an Uncle Jesse beard and a personality (until lately) of a misfit.
I think the company was worried about Shawn Michaels being able to make money as well (the same thing for Roddy Piper, Dolph Ziggler and CM Punk). Guess we could argue that point, couldn’t we?
Some of the greatest matches in the WWE or in wrestling history were based on the idea of “it cannot be done” or “he isn’t the right fit.” If the WWE stayed away from those ideals and matches or feuds, we wouldn’t have seen Arn Anderson vs. Ric Flair or Bobby Roode vs. James Storm or even Undertaker vs. Batista.
Whatever the WWE wants, the fans in the end will let what they want be known.
Cena and Bryan is the match this fan base wants.
There are less than two weeks until SummerSlam and plenty of time to continually build this match. We all know the McMahons will be part of this angle. We all know there will be plenty of promotion for the Divas on E! And we also know there will be plenty of talk about the two wrestlers outside the ring and in entertainment circles.
John Cena is the popular entertainer he is because of his ability to perform in and out of the ring. Bryan is the popular wrestler for the style of shoot fighting he does and his ability to play the underdog. The two sides mesh well. But while Bryan is selling the hell out of the feud, Cena is more stoic, so it makes little sense.
Sooner or later, both sides are going to have to carry it, or it could be ruined before it gets to the point where it is an instant classic.
