Is CM Punk Truly the Best in the World Today?

While CM Punk continues to preach that he is the “Best in the World,” there are other performers who would may beg to differ with that status.

[adinserter block=”1″]When Punk was the WWE Champion for 434 days, there was no doubt who the bull of the woods was. Punk was that dominant. Not The Rock. Not John Cena, Not Dolph Ziggler. Nobody. He walked it, he talked it. He made sure we all knew it and he made sure we never forgot it.

There is some about Punk as a heel that is so much more effective than as a face. However, now that he is facing Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam and his face persona is shining through as an adversary of Paul Heyman, can the fire that burns within continue to draw deep from within and make us believe he is still one bad ass.

Now, we see a different side of Punk. A beaten Punk, a humbled Punk, a mean Punk and an angry Punk. It will be interesting to see if the man who has beaten John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Alberto Del Rio, The Miz and others can still put if all together and remain focused on the prize in front of him.

I have always believed a mad Punk without a title and something to chase makes him a very dangerous man, maybe the best in the business of all time of pursuing a title instead of having around his waist.

Gordon Solie said on many occasions that when ranking contenders and title holders, it is the contender who is working harder and is doing more to solidfy themselves as a better performer. Rick Morton was better than Ric Flair. Dory Funk, Jr. was better than Jack Brisco. Harley Race was better than Terry Funk.

Today, CM Punk is better than Alberto Del Rio. He is better than John Cena. It remains to be seen if he is better than Brock Lesnar.

That is what SummerSlam is for.

Whether he is better than Daniel Bryan right now remains to be seen, but I would love the opportunity to see these two greats in the ring, trying to prove who is better. I think if you looked at the overall body of work since the beginning of the year, it is about even. Remember, Punk was the WWE Champion when the calendar year switched over. Bryan is without a doubt the best in the world right now and everything he touches turns to gold.

There are others you can throw into the mix as well.

Dean Ambrose has proven he is he best of the best when it comes to The Shield and their taking the WWE by storm. As the United States Champion, Ambrose is proving he could be a threat to the World Championship later on down the line. If Ambrose truly gets an opportunity at the belt and someone like Dolph Ziggler or Cody Rhodes, we could really see how great he truly is.

Austin Aries is still the best commodity TNA has. A high flyer and great mat technician, there are few who can use his mouth and ring skills like he does. The fact he has beaten the likes of Jeff hardy and Bobby Roode and still could set up for a huge feud with Chris Sabin over the summer so rocks.

Daniel Bryan. There is nothing I can say about Bryan that you are not already aware of. He is the best of the best right now. Give Bryan any match, and scenario and any type of situation and my money will be on Bryan.
