We learn how Makee became the Covenant’s first human convert in this episode. When the Covenant struck her home planet, she was kidnapped by the Covenant and transported aboard their spaceship. Makee has promised to recover the artifact taken by Master Chief in the present. Meanwhile, Dr. Halsey is preparing to launch Cortana, her artificial intelligence program.
The consciousness of her clone will be implanted into a neurological implant, which could kill the clone. The implant would subsequently be forced into Master Chief. Halsey completes the process and expresses her admiration for her creation. Cortana appears perplexed by the fact that it is unable to fully control John-117.
John speaks with Cortana about his feelings after coming into contact with the artifact. Cortana advises him to get rid of the emotional inhibitor chip he was implanted with as part of the Spartan program. He then decides to breach into the UNSC to gain access to the relic once more.
