Guitar Hero: Van Halen in the Works

vanhalenI can’t talk enough about Guitar Hero: Metallica. It is hands down the greatest game that I have ever played. Activision will continue spotlighting one band in the series later this year. It is now official, Guitar Hero: Van Halen is due out August 5.

This is going to be one of the trickiest games to produce for Activision. Aerosmith and Metallica gave Activision full cooperation in the development of their games. Does the game include Michael Anthony or Wolfgang on bass? Activision said, “This is definitely Van Halen, not Van Hagar.” I guess that answers the Sammy question.

For me, I prefer more of the heavier songs in Guitar Hero. This is why I liked Guitar Hero – Metallica so much. I like Van Halen, but I don’t know how much fun this is going to be? Activision made even the heaviest songs in Metallica playable. Hot for Teacher is arguably the most difficult song to play in Guitar Hero – World Tour. I would imagine that the songs would be slightly easier in a Van Halen game.

Like Metallica and Aerosmith, influential and previous touring bands will be included in the game. Thus far Weezer, Queen, The Offspring, and Queen of the Stone Ages are officially in the game. This is obviously a game made to appeal to a more poppy audience rather than fans of the heavier bands that were included in Metallica.

I guess it could be worse. My hopes for an all thrash game featuring bands like Slayer or Megadeth aren’t coming anytime soon. I hated World Tour with a passion. The game would lose a lot of integrity if Michael Anthony isn’t included in the game, then again nobody complained that Cliff Burton or Jason Newsted weren’t in GH – Metallica.

The great news is that Van Halen has such an extensive catalog of music, that Activision could likely make two games if they wanted to do so. I thought the set list for GH – Metallica was fantastic and very friendly to longtime Metallica fans. If the tradition continues, I would expect a lot of songs from the first three albums.

Let’s hope there is no optional keyboard add-on for the game.
