Guitar Hero 5 on Pace to Suck

guitarhero5Activision officially announced the details for Guitar Hero 5. Activision announced several new options along with some new song titles. I think it is fair to say that unless something changes, Guitar Hero 5 is on pace to be the lamest game of the series. The game is scheduled to hit the streets on September 1.

I was hooked the first time I played Guitar Hero 3 – Legends of Rock. Slayer, Metallica, Slipknot with some classic rock made this the greatest game I discovered since Madden. Guitar Hero 4 – World Tour completely changed that with boring songs, useless options, and the addition of new instruments which killed the idea of a guitar-heavy game.

In my opinion, the addition of the microphone and drums killed the fun of the game. Songs that would otherwise be perfect for a guitar-driven game were eliminated because they weren’t friendly to all instruments. The song selection was also geared more to a mass audience with less heavy content and more poppy songs. Quite honestly, other than a few decent downloadable songs the game is worthless.

Guitar Hero 5 looks to be following the same trend of 4 with songs geared more to a mass audience than the blazing songs featured in the first three games. The press release brags about the inclusion of bands like the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and The White Stripes. Call me crazy, but that sounds about as fun to play on GH as Brittany Spears.

The only good news is that downloadable content from World Tour will be compatible with the game. I don’t know exactly what that means. Rock Band 2 offered gamers for a mere $5 to move all of the songs from the first game into the second. For people like me who downloaded a ton of songs, it was a great feature. I don’t know if this means that only downloadable add-ons will be compatible or if it will be a transition similar to the Rock Band brand.

The confirmed tracks are enough for me to wait for the next band specific Guitar Hero like Guitar Hero: Metallica. Songs confirmed for the game are:

• The Rolling Stones – Sympathy for the Devil
• Bob Dylan – All Along The Watchtower
• The White Stripes – Blue Orchid
• Santana – No One To Depend On (LIVE)
• Vampire Weekend – A-Punk
• Tom Petty – Runnin Down a Dream
• Johnny Cash – Ring of Fire
• Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire

Hey it’s okay because “Party Play” is being offered with the new GH. The press release reads, “Among the first-time-ever features of Guitar Hero 5 are: Party Play, where players can jump in or drop out of gameplay seamlessly; RockFest, a comprehensive competitive experience available featuring five new head-to-head modes playable online or in your living room; and the ability to play the entire set-list from the first time the game is turned on.”
Honestly, I will probably cave in because I am a weak man when it comes to new games. The band promises 30 other bands that will make their Guitar Hero debut. I can only hope that those include classic thrash bands or some guitar-heavy classics. My wishes of an all-Slayer game seem to be falling on deaf ears.
