First WWE took the ‘F’ out, now they take wrestling out

Should Vince McMahon bring WrestleMania to NBC?Several sources have reported that World Wrestling Entertainment has recently issued an ‘internal edict’ that the word wrestling will be no longer be used in any way by the company. This comes just several weeks after the WWE had issues with TVWeek.com using the word wrestling when they wrote a story about Drew Cary’s induction in the 2011 WWE Hall of Fame.

In the same report, the WWE has stated that going forward, all promotional material within the company is expected to be changed to simply just WWE in place of World Wrestling Entertainment, thus re-branding the company to be an ‘entertainment’ based promotion. This is similar to when Kentucky Fried Chicken re-branded itself to KFC.

WWE attempted to shift to being an entertainment based company when they started the weekly guest host gimmicks on their flagship show Monday Night Raw. I understand that they are a publicly traded company, changed to PG to attract more advertisers and a younger audience, but wrestling is wrestling. It is a tradition of sports entertainment that has been around for decades and it is the violent matches I like first and the storyline that makes those matches memorable.

Don’t get me wrong, there is room in wrestling for entertainment, but not so much that it takes away from what it was meant to be in the first place: In ring and out of the ring action with two men and two women beating each other to a pulp.

Watching the Raw following WrestleMania 27, I was actually surprised that the show began with a match and continued with another, as I thought for sure they would do something else as a part of the new ‘entertainment’ rebranding. I will still be interested to see how much or lack thereof actual wrestling matches WWE will feature each week on Raw and SmackDown, and if the matches are short.

TNA should take notice of this change within the WWE and stop being ‘total non-stop talking’ and rebrand Impact to be like their house shows, pure solid wrestling matches, by being a wrestling alternative since Ring of Honor is off television and can’t be seen other than on the internet or in person.

Here is a thought. Since WWE has now removed the word wrestling from the company, does this mean that WrestleMania will be re-branded next year to WWEmania?
