Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz will get a chance to put bantamweights on the MMA map. Faber vs. Cruz will headline UFC 132: Cruz vs. Faber 2 marking the first time a bantamweight fight has headlined a UFC event. UFC vets Wanderlei Silva and Tito Ortiz provide the support on a stacked UFC 132 card.
The long awaited Cruz vs. Faber rematch will top a stacked UFC 132 card featuring a plethora of intriguing matches for hardcore MMA fans. The July 2 UFC MGM Grand event will feature support underneath by two MMA legends as Tito Ortiz and Wanderlei Silva are matched up in fights guaranteed to keep the Vegas fans on their feet.
Tito Ortiz will attempt to fight only his third match since re-signing with the UFC back in 2009. Numerous injuries have kept Ortiz in and out of fights since his UFC return. Ortiz will not be handed an easy fight when he steps into the octagon to take on former Ultimate Fighter Ryan Bader. Both guys will look to rebound off of losses. Ortiz is fighting for his UFC job as a loss would make Ortiz winless in his last six UFC fights.
Carlos Condit and Dong Hyun Kim will also meet on the UFC 132 undercard in yet another fight that has potential to be Fight of the Night. Quite frankly I am just as excited about this one as I am about Cruz vs. Faber. The winner here is likely in line for a title shot against champion Georges St-Pierre. Kim is undefeated and Condit is riding a three fight win streak. The two have 18 knockouts between them and should bring the fireworks to UFC 132.
Cruz and Faber has been a rematch that MMA fans have been talking about for the last several years. Faber tapped our Cruz in a successful WEC featherweight championship defense back in 2007. Cruz has amassed an 8 fight win streak since the loss while Faber has struggled some over his last eight fights. The fight would give Faber his first chance at the title since debuting in the division last year. Faber is undefeated in the division with two wins.
This is going to be a very interesting card to sell to casual MMA fans. I think hardcore MMA fans are salivating over some of these fights. However, to casual MMA fans that buy fights to see the names like Penn, St-Pierre, Lesnar, and Couture, it may be a struggle to sell them on Cruz vs. Faber, especially when they are likely shelling out $50 to watch UFC 131 less than a month prior to the event.
On the positive side, Dominick Cruz is already doing a good job of hyping the fight with Faber. Cruz has taken some shots at Faber in the press and UFC president Dana White is adding some fuel to the fire.
“There is no love lost between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber, and they are both fired up to not only fight again, but to fight for the UFC bantamweight title,” UFC President Dana White said. “The bantamweight division is one of the most exciting weight classes in this sport, and Dominick and Urijah will both bring it for five rounds.”
