Elon Musk Provides Starlink Satellite Broadband to Ukraine Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Amid the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, there are mounting fears that Russia might disconnect Ukraine from the outside world.

This prompted Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov to send SOS to celebrity tech billionaire Elon Musk as he urged him to provide his embattled nation with stations.

Mykhailo Fedorov took to Twitter by tagging Elon Musk and wrote, “While you try to colonize Mars — Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space — Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people! We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations”.

Elon Musk activates Starlink internet service in Ukraine after Ukraine’s SOS

Musk was quick to respond saying, “Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. more terminals en route.”

Musk on 26th Feb said that his company SpaceX’s Starlink satellite broadband service has been activated.

Not only internet services are disrupted in Ukraine but also other services like water, electricity services are impacted as Russian forces have refused to return. However, Kyiv said that it is prepared to give a tough fight which seems to be one of the difficult battles for the country in the recent past.

Mykhailo Fedorov also requested Elon Musk “to address sane Russians to stand” and voice their opinion against the Russian invasion on Ukraine.

According to Internet monitor NetBlocks, Ukraine faced a “series of significant disruptions to internet service” ever since Russia launched military operations in Ukraine on 24th Feb.

Starlink manages a constellation of approximately 2,000 satellites that focus to provide internet access across the globe. On 25th Feb, Friday, Starlink announced that it has launched a further 50 more satellites and several more are expected to be put into Earth’s orbit very soon.

Starlink has a presence in more than 25 countries with 145,000 users. The laser satellite links provide not only smooth operation but also internet coverage that is reliable as per Elon Musk. Also, satellites can operate without sending back the data to the ground station as the data is beamed between the satellites with the help of laser links, enabling super fast speed.

Starlink is among the companies which are launching small satellites to facilitate broadband internet services typically in the terrestrial network where it is tough to set up the infrastructure required for the Internet.

Explaining the difference one user tweeted, “Ukraine people have access to the fastest satellite internet system ever created. Russia can not disable the Ukrainian internet access fully without cyber attacking foreign data centers.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation in eastern Ukraine on 24th Feb. His full-scale invasion has forced local residents to flee for their lives resulting in many casualties.

Since then, Russia has been making military attacks on Ukraine under the leadership of Putin. As of Feb 26, Ukrainian soldiers are fighting tooth and nail to protect its capital city of Kyiv.
