Drew McIntyre, Mark Henry and Other WWE Thoughts

The WWE announced yesterday that it had released mid-level and bottom-feeding talent from its roster.

[adinserter block=”1″]Finally, the company is trimming the fat of bit players who have little use in the company other than being fodder for jobbing. The only person released by the company on Thursday I find fault with is Drew McIntyre, who had the look of a star and of course – as it is the nature of the WWE – he was never used properly. Aksana may be a close second, but her role was never truly defined and well she was expendable.

McIntyre’s released is another prime example of the WWE reaching too far too fast. McIntyre was once determined by none other than Vince McMahon as the “Chosen One,” and the future of the company. That is all it took to send the rising star into a tailspin, ultimately leading to a union with fellow 3MB mate and released wrestler, Jinder Mahal. Somehow, someway, Heath Slater avoided a pink slip this week.

But let’s not get excited about that, there could be more coming in the near future. I suspect there will be some more fat trimming before the summer heat cools down.

I identified McIntyre as a miss by the WWE because in many cases there are good decisions for firing talent and bad decisions and then there is the unexplained reasons. McIntyre has a look, a talent and a gimmick that could have been very successful in the company. Now, if he were to travel to TNA or another promotion like ROH, could he overcome the stigma of being a WWE reject and rise to the top of the mountain as a man attraction?

Henry’s place in history

Thursday marked the 43rd birthday of WWE superstar Mark Henry. Even at his advanced age in the business and the fact for the past 19 years, he has been doing it and doing it and doing it well. As a former world champion and tag team champion, there are not many men in this business who have been as successful as the former Olympic power lifter from Silsby, Texas. And there aren’t that many wrestlers who would have put up with the antics the WWF/WWE have put him through over his career.

At some point, gimmicks become more antidote and comical, which often mean the company is getting some kick out a wrestler’s demise and their expense.

When discussing where Henry fits in a ranking of big men in the business, he is certainly a top 10 talent. Andre the Giant, Undertaker, Hulk Hogan and Big Show are definitely ahead of him with Kane adding to that list. Then, the message and list gets a little more complicated. Is he better than King Kong Bundy in his prime? What about someone like Bruiser Brody or Vader?

What happens to underrated big men like Terry Gordy or Big Boss Man or even One Man Gang? The difference in eras makes this a hard list to complete, but it shows that because of his time in the business – where he started late at 24 years old – Henry could compete with the best of them.

Another face World Champion?

[adinserter block=”2″]In order for there to be harmony in the WWE until Daniel Bryan makes his triumphant return to the ring from neck surgery, there must be a face champion to come out of the Money in the Bank ladder match. Someone, other than John Cena, must capture gold. But the prospects of Sheamus being the champion or CM Punk making a return to the ring or even Sting descending from the rafters to capture gold are about as far-fetched as Brock Lesnar turning on Paul Heyman and winning the belt and the hearts of the WWE faithful.

Since it seems so off base, don’t you think it could happen?
