In less than two weeks Daniel Bryan will be headlining SummerSlam 2013 against John Cena. Bryan is out doing media prior to his WWE title match and has a few interesting to things to say about John Cena, Randy Orton, and more.
The fan reaction, specifically the booing of John Cena is one of the most interesting dynamics in wrestling history. I can’t ever remember seeing a top babyface booed so heavily on television week to week. Bryan was asked about it and thinks the reason that Cena is so polarizing is that it’s time for a change at the top of the cards.
“I think it’s because he’s been on top for so long. If Man United won the championship every single year people would be like, ‘I hate Man United’. People would be so sick of them, even if they’re really good. It’s one of those kind of things. You see him and he’s everything the WWE wants as a WWE Champion. He’s been able to hold up his end on the performance aspect of it. People are always wanting something new, wanting something different, and that’s where the divisiveness comes in.”
Bryan was also asked about his 18-second infamous match at WrestleMania 28 against Sheamus. Many of his fans were crushed when their hero’s in-ring time lasted less than half of a minute. Bryan was as well and saw his tag team title match this year as redemption for last year’s embarrassing appearance.
“Yeah, I still feel I have a lot to make up for as far as WrestleMania is concerned. Even this year we retained the Tag Team Championship but it felt like the time we were out there was so short. It was still only maybe six or seven minutes for the whole match. I want to go out there and be in one of the true main events at WrestleMania. To be able to go out there and wrestle for 20 or 30 minutes in front of the biggest crowds.”
One of the hottest topics in the business right now is the incident that happened with Randy Orton in South Africa. Orton was attacked by a fan that hit the ring and connected on a low blow. How would Bryan have handled the situation and how did he think the Viper handled the dangerous situation?
“You hope that security comes in and does their job. Anything like that you have to toe a very thin line right there. As far as even defending yourself, there’s legal things involved. I think Randy, given the circumstances, handled himself as best as he could. It’s a very difficult situation to be put in.”
