Over the years The WWE has been obsessed with hiring writers that have some affiliation with Hollywood and Television. Guys like Freddie Prinze Jr, Ed Ferrara (writer for the show Duckman), or even former writer David Lagana (on writing team for the hit show Friends). I have nothing against these men as everyone has ideas about how wrestling should be presented, though I do believe the WWE or TNA should look into other avenues of entertainment when looking for members of the creative team and source material for storylines. This avenue is comic books.
Now a lot of you may be reading this and thinking to yourselves that comics and wrestling don’t have anything in common, but you would be wrong. Comic books and wrestling have more parallels and similarities than you can imagine: The battle between good and evil (heels and babyfaces), the union of heroes and villains to make super teams and groups (Stables and Tag Teams), and compelling storylines that take place over an extended period of time. Wrestling promotions should be looking into writers from this medium as an added bonus to writers from Hollywood, as a lot of them know how to set a story and plot out their bigger picture. To prove my proposal to look into comic book writers, I present to you ten storylines from comic books that would work in a wrestling setting.
[adinserter block=”2″]1. What’s So Funny about Truth Justice and The American Way? : Superman in Action Comics #775
Plot Summary-( taken from Wikipedia) – “This tale features The Elite, a team of super-powered antiheroes fronted by Manchester Black, who gained worldwide popularity for viciously killing their foes. Despite the acclaim and approval that the Elite are enjoying, Superman knows that they are in the wrong, continually defying the Elite even after they save a city. As tensions between them finally culminate in a mass showdown- taking place on Jupiter‘s moons at Superman’s request-, Superman, taking advantage of the fight being taped, makes it appear as though he has ‘killed’ the Elite members- really using his speed to get them out of harm’s way at the last minute so that nobody sees it- to show the public that violence is never a positive thing, stating that he will never stop fighting his way to show the world what it could be.”
Transformed into a wrestling storyline – Superman’s position could be taken by a Hulk Hogan or a John Cena (surprise surprise) and a group of what appear to be faces can come into the fold taking out the bad guys using excessive force. They can injure, maim, and will probably get cheered for it. I would have the heels look up to the face as if they were their hero growing up, only they want to put an end to the heels dastardly deeds once and for all. Cena or Hogan can try to teach them that it is wrong to use excessiveness due to sportsmanship and is ignored. This brings Cena or Hogan to a darker place to put the group down. I think it would play out pretty interesting and take a face to a darker place for what he feels his right, a contrast of interest over what’s right or wrong. With the right people in the helm it could be a more character driven storyline having the fans choose sides.
2. Marvel Comic’s Civil War Storyline
Plot Summary – (taken from Comicvine.com) “After the super-villain Nitro sets off an explosion in Stamford, CT, killing the New Warriors and hundreds of innocents, the American Government, blaming the super-hero community for these deaths, enforces a Super-Human Registration Act that forces super-heroes to reveal their secret identities and work for the government, labeled as weapons of mass destruction. This doesn’t sit well with some heroes and the Super-Hero community is divides into sides: Iron Man’s Pro-Registration Act team enforced by SHIELD and its new director Maria Hill, and Captain America’s Anti-Registration Act team called the Secret Avengers. This separation causes a super-human Civil War that pits the two teams against each other physically and morally. The Civil War has many consequences including the separation of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, the revelation of Spider-Man’s secret identity to the world, the departure of the Thing to France, the death of Goliath and finally the death of Captain America himself at the end of the War.”
Transformed into a wrestling storyline – This is what should have been the storyline after the CM Punk shoot only instead of HHH as COO I would have brought in Shane McMahon to fight over the company and what their vision should be. This is where certain wrestlers would choose sides leaving a full scale Civil War in WWE. Everyone has their opinion of what wrestling should be and this would be a perfect storyline to bring it up. We can have the old guard of the WWE where Vince McMahon has certain people loyal to him (HHH, Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Alberto Del Rio, The Miz) and new wrestlers who side with Shane and want a shot and want wrestling to change (CM Punk, Zack Ryder, Daniel Bryan, Rey Misterio, R-Truth) It would be an angle where everyone picks sides and total chaos is brought to the WWE. Will the WWE change or will it stay the same. How will the two sides coexist? Tag Teams would break up due to ideologies behind wrestling, friends become enemies, and enemies become unlikely allies. It makes for interesting television and blurs the lines between heels and faces. Exciting television and a way for fans to tune in to see what happens next. Maybe this could make Raw and Smackdown finally different from each other.
3. Batman and Son
Plot Summary- Batman finds out he has a son with long time lover and Assassin Talia. His son Damien wants to get to know his father but has been trained to be a warrior by his mother. Damien is a loose cannon and provides to be a handful for Batman before siding up with his father to fight crime.
Transformed into a wrestling storyline – I have had this idea for a while and if I ever get hired for creative I would use this as my opening angle. The Undertaker would have a son who has all of his powers and attributes except a little bit more deadly and ruthless than the Undertaker. Taker would be done finishing a match and supernatural things would start happening to him. Lights would go out blue light would come in, scary music, everything the Undertaker does but a little bit more macabre. This would go on for weeks until the culmination of a debut. The son of the Undertaker (or the sondertaker as I like to call it ha!) would come to help the Undertaker and gain his trust. Just when trust is gained the son of the Undertaker turns on his father and buries him or sends him away for abandoning him. In the Undertaker’s absence, the sondertaker creates his own ministry and gets a grasp on the world title. Just when the sondertaker thinks he has full control of the WWE, The Undertaker returns putting his streak on the line against the sondertakers title. There is your Wrestlemania match, and at the end of the feud they forgive each other and side up. Throw Kane in the mix and you have yourself a nice 3 year long program.
4.. Justice League- Doom/ Teen Titans the Judas Contract
Plot Summary – (taken from Wikipedia) “Tower of Babel deals with Batman’s perceived betrayal to the superhuman community by keeping records concerning the strengths and weaknesses of his allies in the JLA, including plans to neutralize his allies in a fight. His files are stolen by Ra’s al Ghul, who uses them to defeat the League through a coordinated attack to prevent them from interfering with his latest scheme.”
Plot Summary (Judas Contract) – “Young psychopath, Tara Markov, is seduced and trained by Deathstroke to infiltrate the Teen Titans and to tear them apart from within. One of the most shocking stories ever to be written in comics. Deathstroke the Terminator has a long held grudge against the Titans relating to the death of his son Grant Wilson the original Ravager. In order to fulfill this grudge he seduces a 15 year old with the extraordinary ability to command the very earth to her will.Terra successfully fools the other titans into accepting her onto the team as Terra, even stealing Beast Boy’s heart in the process, but when the time comes to execute Death stroke’s final plan, Terra proves too emotionally unstable and literally brings the house down killing herself in the process. The Titans were never entirely clear what happened to them and Terra’s betrayal was considered an aberration despite the fact that she clearly relished her role as a sexpot and a traitor.”
Transforming it into a wrestling storyline – When John Cena had to join the Nexus I thought this is what he would do to stop them. Get to know each member personally, and then exploit their weaknesses for the greater good. This could work with any cast of characters. Even in TNA with the Main Event Mafia. Someone could get so close that they neutralize each and every one of them using members’ insecurities and weaknesses against them. A face can destroy heels from the inside or a heel can destroy faces from the inside causing some major chaos.
5. Spiderman No More
Plot Summary – Peter Parker quits being Spider-Man because he gets no respect no matter how many people he saves. When he throws his costume away in the garbage, some kid finds it and brings it to Jameson chief of the Daily Bugle. While Parker is enjoying life not being Spider-Man, a new crime lord called Kingpin rises.
[adinserter block=”1″]Transformed into a wrestling storyline – A hero is a hard thing to be in wrestling and I would give this storyline to Bret Hart. He would play the role of a hero who gets no respect perfectly. This was kind of Hart V.S Austin, but to me if Bret left because he felt disrespected and not appreciated by the fans and either left or became a commentator or something not wrestling related, it would add to the story. Steve Austin or whatever heel could be rising through the ranks completely tearing up the promotion limb by limb causing the hero to return and put a stop to the reign of evil .
These are just some examples I have to get people who like wrestling into comics and to get people who like comics into wrestling. I hope WWE can look into some of these sources and see how much depth their characters can have. If you have a storyline that can be made from your favorite comic book story please send them to me @ Surena6189@gmail.com and I’ll post the best ones. You may not have to agree with me on some of these but I hope I’ve opened your mind to other things. Email me and tell me what you think. Thanks for reading!
