If you thought that CM Punk only had eyes for the WWE championship you are mistaken. According to reports, CM Punk wants to wrestle WWE Hall of Fame superstar Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 28.
The report certainly makes some sense out of recent actions from Punk. For one, it didn’t go unnoticed that Punk was wearing a Steve Austin t-shirt when he cut that now infamous promo on RAW Roulette. Two, he has mentioned WrestleMania numerous times including his demand to be in the main-event. Could the WWE Universe actually see a WrestleMania in 2012 featuring the two biggest WWE superstars of the last generation?
Dave Meltzer reports in his latest Wrestling Observer newsletter that Punk has set his sights on the former WWE champion.
“Punk has wanted to return before Mania, and wants to face Steve Austin on that show. We’re told the likelihood of that happening is low.”
Meltzer also speculates that this match is likely not going to happen. Steve Austin has made conflicting statements about returning to the ring over the last year, his last statements being that he was done. But is there a chance, even a slim one, that we can see the Texas Rattlesnake co-headlining WrestleMania with the Great One?
[adinserter block=”2″]I hope not. I think the timing would be wrong for an Austin vs. Punk match. Punk has clearly positioned himself going into Money in the Bank as a babyface. My hunch is that whatever happens on Sunday will result in Punk leaving Chicago as an even bigger hero to his followers. Putting him in a match with Austin would make him an immediate heel, retarding all of the progress the WWE would theoretically have made with Punk by next spring.
Steve Austin has not wrestled in years, other than a brief workout in the ring on Tough Enough against Luke Robinson. Could he still deliver an Austin-like performance on the big stage? I don’t have any reason to believe he can’t. Unless I missed something, I don’t recall reading about any serious injuries to Austin in the last few years. He looks to be in the best shape of his life right now. He looked great against Robinson, albeit for a couple of minutes. Why the heck not?
Austin has flirted with the idea of coming back for another big WrestleMania match over the last few years. The last one I remember was a rumor about a plan for Austin to wrestle Ken Anderson at a WrestleMania a few years back. For a number of reasons that never took place, but if he was ever going to make his comeback I can’t think of a better time than now.
In a twist of irony or coincidence, Austin was asked about wrestling CM Punk in an interview back in April on WWE.com. Austin was asked about a potential rivalry against Punk based on the WWE All Stars “Fantasy Warfare” mode in which they are matched up.
“Damn right it is. CM Punk is one of my favorite WWE Superstars right now. I like what he brings to the ring, I like his mental game. I think a rivalry between “Stone Cold” and CM Punk would have been a hell of a spectacle and a lot of entertainment.”
If Austin were interested, it would be a tricky situation for the WWE. In a perfect world Austin would come back at WrestleMania 29, leaving the spotlight all on The Rock vs. John Cena. But, anything can happen by WrestleMania 29. Austin could change his mind which is probably the biggest thing to fear. More importantly, CM Punk may not be nearly as hot in 2013 as he will be by next year. Does anyone have any confidence in the WWE to sustain Punk’s push for two and a half years?
[adinserter block=”1″]I think it is fair to point out the hypocrisy here when it comes to Punk and his current promos. Punk has regularly blasted the WWE and Dwayne Johnson for just walking into the WrestleMania 28 main-event without putting the time in to “deserve it.” Isn’t he asking Steve Austin to do the same thing?
Austin vs. Punk is a fun match to talk about and I don’t blame CM Punk for trying. Hey, who in the WWE locker room doesn’t want to wrestle Steve Austin at WrestleMania? But there is something here. Austin and Punk appear to be very friendly on Twitter, often tweeting to or about one another. Austin has said complimentary things about Punk in media interviews over the last year. It just appears to me that if Austin was going to come back into the ring and work with anyone right now, it would be Punk.
So does this mean he has re-signed?
