Updated: CM Punk Undergoes Emergency Knee Surgery

[adinserter block=”1″] broke the story on Tuesday that the WWE champion is out of commission. CM Punk reportedly underwent emergency knee surgery which has resulted in a ton of questions regarding current plans for the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania in 2013. Luckily it appears that Punk will be ready for both events.

The story reports that Punk was injured going through a table at the close of Monday Night RAW.

“Last night, after Ryback drove him through a table, The Straight Edge Superstar took a late night flight to Florida for an emergency consultation with Dr. James Andrews. A review of his condition resulted in the WWE Champion’s immediate surgery today.”

This is an absolute 100% game changer! Punk is a major part of the current plans moving forward and if he is unable to go in time for the Rumble, everything is going to change. The current working plan had Punk losing the WWE title to The Rock at the Rumble and The Rock defending against John Cena at WrestleMania with Punk rumored to be wrestling The Undertaker. That is all in jeopardy.

This would be the first time that I can ever recall that the WWE had to change all of its major plans leading up to WrestleMania. There have been backup plans in the past but I can’t imagine that there is any kind of a backup plan for this one. The big question some have pondered last year was what if something happened to Cena or The Rock before Mania. I don’t know if anyone even gave Punk a second thought.

The irony here is that Punk was mocking fans and pro wrestling media last week on Twitter about seeing a doctor. Punk later revealed that he was simply getting medical clearance to fly in an F-16 for Tribute to the Troops. Wow, talk about some major karma coming back here. The lesson learned here is to never joke about an injury on Twitter.

So what if Punk is hurt? I think the easiest plan here would be to set up a situation like the 1992 Rumble where you have the Rumble decide the new champion. The Rock wins and plans remain intact for the WrestleMania 29 main-event. As far as a backup match for The Undertaker, well you need to look no further than my blog from earlier today in regards to other selections.

[adinserter block=”2″]Keep in mind that no official time table has been set yet for Punk’s return. At this point for all we know Punk could be back in time for the Rumble. That said, the big joke in sports is that the words you never want to hear as an athlete is “just saw Dr. Andrews.” That is generally never good and there is a better than 50/50 shot that Punk will be on the shelf past the Rumble and maybe even past WrestleMania.

We’ll have more to come when we have it.

Update: reported that Punk was just getting a knee scope. “CM Punk underwent knee surgery today to remove a piece of torn meniscus that had locked up his knee,” said Andrews’ colleague, WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann. “The surgery, performed by Dr. James Andrews, went smoothly and CM Punk is expected to make a full recovery.”

What this means is that Punk will be ready for the Rumble but will more than likely miss Tables, Ladders, and Chairs 2012.

  1. Bleh, I hope you're wrong about the current plan to have Punk lose the title to the Rock. It makes the champion look so week when a guy comes off the street and beats him.

  2. If Punky Brewster doesn't make it to TLC, my best guess for a 2nd main event, with Cena vs Dove Zigglah being the main event instead because…it's Cena, would have The Ryback and Team Hell No take on The Recyclables. This is just a guess, though. We'll see what happens on Monday.

    • My guess/prediction came true: The Ryback and Team Hell No WILL face off against The Recyclables in a TLC match. Get well soon for your big match with Rocky, Punky.
