CM Punk In Hot Water Over Homophobic Slur (Video)

CM Punk gay slur promoCM Punk is in a bit of hot water of some words he chose poorly at a WWE house show over the weekend. Punk used a homophobic slur which was caught on video and posted to You Tube. Thanks to TMZ.com, the story has now received national headlines.

If Punk is looking to make an impact out of his last two weeks with the WWE, mission accomplished. Punk is seen on video yelling at a fan from the WWE’s latest swing of Australia shows. Magnum CM screams at the fan, “You homo!” Hello Titan Towers…GLAAD on line 1!

I can understand some guys making this mistake but CM Punk is a smart guy who really should know better. As a matter of a fact, EVERYONE in the WWE should know better! This now marks the fourth time I can recall this year alone that the WWE has been blasted by GLAAD and various media outlets for a WWE superstar using a homophobic slur. Wait until someone gets a hold of the Degeneration-X DVD and takes a look back at those promos during the DX vs. McMahons feud.

[adinserter block=”2″]In all seriousness it is unfathomable that any WWE star would get caught at this point using homophobic slurs. John Cena, The Rock, and Michael Cole have all brought the WWE unwanted attention for using this kind of language. According to Dave Meltzer on his recent F4Wonline.com podcast, Cole actually had to attend awareness classes as part of his punishment by the WWE.

TMZ.com watches for this kind of stuff like a hawk. TMZ reaches a lot of people and can really cause a lot of problems for you, your career, and your company if the wrong piece of video hits their website. TMZ.com senior editor Harvey Levin is gay which likely makes the website a bit more sensitive to this kind of stuff. So it shouldn’t have surprised anyone when this video landed on TMZ.com.

Punk issued a public apology for the slur on his Twitter account. From the choice of words used on his tweet, I am guessing that this apology came straight from him and not from a prepared WWE statement.

I’m glad TMZ posted that video because everybody needs to be held accountable for thier bullshit, me included. What I said was bullshit….I’m embarrassed. I own up to being a total douche in this situation and I offer a sincere apology to anybody I hurt with careless words.

The irony here is that all of these slip ups have come from guys in the middle of the top angle in the company. Cole used the slur when he was the ratings king on RAW, Cena and Rock before WrestleMania 27, and now Punk in the midst of the biggest push of his career. I do think it is just coincidence but interesting nonetheless.

[adinserter block=”1″]I am a little torn on this one. I am not gay nor do I have any gay family members so I can’t relate to the outrage here of the gay community. On the one hand, it really bothers me when anyone gets so sensitive over words. On the other hand, I can easily see their point here and with previous WWE criticisms. The WWE superstars reach a lot of people, especially kids. If these kids are associating being gay as something terrible it could lead to hate crimes, suicide, and a lot of future insensitivity. I do get it.

I am also a guy in my late thirties that grew up on listening to heel pro wrestlers used insensitive remarks in their promos or live tirades on a weekly basis. Seeing pro wrestling heels wind up as national media stories because of something they said in their promo is rather surreal. However, there are plenty of ways to get over as a heel without using a homophobic slur. Quite frankly I always found those kinds of promos to be kind of cheap and corny anyway.

How ironic that this all happens on a week where the central theme for this Monday’s WWE RAW was the first amendment?

  1. Hey Dan, my horse went "lame" and he does not like you using the word lame. And a friend of mine is very "weak" so please don't use that word either. This is the "most gay" article of all time. A fact's a fact. Out here.

  2. Develop some thick skin, people. This used to be the United States of America. I has now become the United States of the Politically Offended!

  3. Also it wasn't "CAUGHT" on video…there was a camera RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. Only a complete blind man would've have noticed that.

  4. Wow. I see we are in the year 1911 by the attitudes of some people on here. Nice to see that people are expressing lots of tolerance for people who are different.

  5. Leave the man alone, he has a right so say what he wants to say. Homo's are fair game, they chose that deviant lifestyle. Let 'em suffer.

  6. @jack mehoff couldn't agree more, political correctness is getting out of hand. I don't care if a person is gay or straight but if gays want to be more accepted, maybe they should learn to grow a thicker skin. Getting bent out of shape every time someone uses a certain word does make you look overly sensitive and weak, just stoking the fires. EVERYBODY is a HOMO, we're all humans and that makes us HOMOsapiens but political correct ass clowns don't look at it like that, instead they make a big fuss about NOTHING to justify their existence.

  7. get over it. so your butt sore over punks comments. get busy living or get busy dying. the real sad part is punk apologizing. a small minority shoving their perverted lifestyles down our throats and everyone so politicall correct. guess what? the greatest disease of the 20th century is connected to this lifestyle.. AIDS… want the truth. read the book and the band played on by randy shilts, a homosexual man. awesome. how aids got here and how spread..manup!!!!!!

  8. @ John above, If you use the term "That's gay…" it is obviously used in a derogatory way AND shows a lack of vocabulary and intelligence on your part… How hard is it to simply say something is lame or weak, why does it have to be "gay"? Oh, because you are actually bigoted and don't even realize it… Sure, accidents happen and words slip out, but you learn to adjust your vocabulary when you really do care about not sounding bigoted, period.

  9. honestly who cares. most of the ppl that do watch this look at gay as making you weaker. im so sick of this politically correct suicide. everyone needs to stop being a bunch of homo b*tches!

  10. Gotta agree with Eric. I am a big CM Punk fan, and have a lot of gay friends. While I didn't approve of what he said, I appreciated the fact that he manned up to it almost immediately and admitted that he was wrong and shouldn't have said it. When you consider that the WWE hadn't even mentioned this incident before Punk had already apologized for it, and you can tell it was sincere.
