Inside The Wheelhouse: Will Chris Jericho resign with the WWE

Chris JerichoThe rumors are starting to swirl and the speculation has begun in regards to the future of Chris Jericho in World Wrestling Entertainment.

According to reports Chris Jericho is on the last month of his three year deal with the WWE and his contract will be up come September. As a fan of Jericho’s I must admit that it is sad to hear that we could possibly being seeing the last couple of matches of Jericho’s in the WWE for possibly quite sometime. It is not clear yet where the current state of the contract talks are between the two but there is already some writing on the wall on what will happen when Jericho’s contract comes up in September.

Chris Jericho’s band Fozzy is starting a European tour on October 10th and according to their website it ends on October 23rd. It is obviously not the longest of tours but clearly shows that come October if Jericho is still under contract with the WWE he will not be on television. What it does do is support speculation that after Jericho’s contract with WWE runs up in September he will at least take some extended time off from the ring to rest up from being on the road with the company non-stop the last two years.

As many wrestling fans know Jericho is one of the few names in Wrestling right now that also gets respect from those in Hollywood. He has hosted various VH1 Metal Countdowns/Shows in the past and that door for him seems to always be open whether he is in wrestling or taking time off from the ring. Most recently Jericho hosted a game show on ABC called “Downfall” that while only lasting five episodes, appears to be getting another run in the fall according to Jericho’s twitter.

With a Fozzy European tour in October, new episodes of “Downfall” being taped in the fall. You have to wonder where the future of Jericho will be in the WWE. Even on Jericho’s twitter (@IamJericho) he has stated that he is in the midst of writing a new autobiography about his time in the WWE till the present. Who knows how much that could take away from the former World Heavyweight Champion?

[adinserter block=”1″]Jericho’s schedule appears to be busy come this fall but it’s not like he has pulled off this stuff while wrestling for the WWE before. He has done promotional appearances with Fozzy during the summer, promoted their newest album, performed in the past etc. He has filmed the first part of “Downfall” while under contract with the WWE and has obviously written his new autobiography while still wrestling. So there is a chance that he could resign and return to work as if there was no speculation at all.

While looking at everything on Jericho’s plate come this fall and given his age, 39 years old. I have to figure that once this current contract expires he will take some sort of time off from the ring. I don’t think it will be as long as his first time away (2 years) but it will be time away from the ring to heal up his body. Let’s face it, at the age of 39, for us to hope to see Jericho in the ring for a good period of time again he needs to rest up, his last time away from added potential years to his wrestling career.

One thing is for certain we know if Jericho doesn’t resign with the WWE he won’t be going to TNA anytime soon. Jericho has been one of the most outspoken WWE wrestlers to be against the TNA product. He has openly tweeted about matches they have had and how they have buried big name wrestlers. He has been outspoken against the way TNA does their book even comparing to throwing human feces against the wall most of the time. It would be a major shock if Jericho was to end up in TNA but I wouldn’t bet on that happening anytime soon.

If you continue to speculate whether or not Jericho will resign with the WWE this fall you need to also look at the way he has been booked in recent months on the WWE programming. Jericho really hasn’t been used since coming to RAW until recently when he was paired up with Team WWE. He has spent time at a mid-card level helping guys like Evan Bourne appear to be future Main event stars for the company. Something that while I believe takes away a very good wrestler at the Main event level, Jericho does so well.

Speaking of the Team WWE vs. Team Nexus match at Summerslam, which is without a doubt the most anticipated match on the Summerslam card this year. We saw on this past Monday Night’s RAW it appears that for the time being WWE creative has removed the two heels on the team, Edge & Chris Jericho from the team. Personally I thought having Edge & Jericho on the same team as other faces made things very interesting for the Team WWE vs. Team Nexus match at Summerslam.

[adinserter block=”2″]Along with anything on the internet world of the wrestling business rumors started to pick up steam once again late last week after word got out that both Edge & Jericho would be taken off Team WWE thanks to the spoilers from the taped RAW that aired pre-taped last night. Some people are under the impression that we will get an Edge vs. Chris Jericho match now at Summerslam in a “Loser Leaves the WWE” match. If that were to happen and I don’t know how that could in less then a week away from Summerslam, it would definitely point to signs of Jericho walking away from the business for a while.

Whatever Jericho does with his current contract issues it’s pretty safe to say whether he takes time away from the ring or not, he will return to the WWE. He has made it very clear he enjoys working at the WWE and wants to end his career with World Wrestling Entertainment. While selfishly I will miss watching Jericho matches on WWE television, I respect the fact that he will be going out, resting up the war wounds from the ring and expanding his career as a entertainer by opening new doors for himself.

  1. It will be tought seeing Y2J go, but I think he'll likely return one day. Meanwhile, one thing WWE needs to do is bring Mickie James back to the company. All fans who want Mickie James back in WWE, please go to this site and sign this petition:

And call WWE at 203-352-8600, ask for "fan services", and tell them you want Mickie back.

Here's something else you can do. Go to this site and leave a comment about Mickie's release.

And Mickis has twitter and facebook, so if you have an account, you can contact her and tell her you want her back in WWE.

  2. It will be strange on Monday nights not seeing Y2J in the ring…Although his latest character can be annoying sometimes, you forget they are normal people away from the ring. Good Luck Chris
