Chael Sonnen Talks Major Trash On Anderson Silva

Chael SonnenIf trash talking sells UFC fights then Chael Sonnen just talked Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva UFC 117 into a blockbuster. Chael Sonnen recently did a UFC Fan Q & A session and unloaded on Anderson Silva. Watch this Chael Sonnen video and decide for yourself whether he is a brilliant marketer or a fighter with a death wish.

The video comes from the UFC Fan Q & A at UFC 115. Chael Sonnen has never been shy about his views on Anderson Silva. Yet this takes trash talking to a whole new level. Among some of the memorable topics would be Sonnen calling Anderson Silva’s BJJ training a joke and more or less calling Anderson Silva a fraud in and out of the octagon. The video has to be seen to be believed. If Silva was upset at what Demian Maia said about his BJJ, he will be furious when he hears what Sonnen had to say.

It is a really interesting tact here that Chael Sonnen is taking. Is he more interested in winning the fight or selling UFC 117 buys? Chael Sonnen is an extremely intelligent man. My gut instinct tells me that Sonnen sees this as his one big opportunity to cash in. It doesn’t take genius to look at the biggest grossing fights in UFC history and note the common denominator. Ken Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz, Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell, Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans, and the record hold Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir II all broke the bank as a result of some great trash talking between fighters leading up to the fight.

The other common denominator here is that the fighter that usually talks the most trash is the one that loses. Frank Mir, Tito Ortiz, Frank Shamrock, Ken Shamrock, Phil Baroni, and Jason Miller have all talked a lot of trash leading up to fights and wound up losing and losing hard.  Most of the better UFC and MMA fighters let their body of work do the talking. All well in good, but the most astute fighters whether boxing or MMA know that good records don’t necessarily sell fights. A great promo on the other hand is the way to go.

I like Chael Sonnen but on paper he looks outmatched big time against Anderson Silva. I was probably going to skip UFC 117 after dropping $50 for that last Anderson Silva charade. That’s changed thanks to Chael Sonnen. Mismatch or not, I cannot wait to see how Anderson Silva answers Chael Sonnen at UFC 117. If this video is a prelude to the UFC 117 Countdown show, UFC 117 could eclipse previous records and break the bank!

Can Anderson Silva speak perfect English or not? You be the judge.
