Bray Wyatt Out, Dean Ambrose In vs. Brock Lesnar at WWE WrestleMania 32

The big news coming out of WWE Fastlane 2016 wasn’t a change in the WrestleMania 32 main-event, but it was a significant card change nonetheless. A new report indicates that one of the top three WrestleMania matches have been changed with a last minute shakeup.

Dave Meltzer broke the news on his podcast following Fastlane. Meltzer reports that the planned Brock Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt match has been removed from the Mania lineup. The beast will now be fed Dean Ambrose in a match that while odd, should generate a lot more buzz than Wyatt vs. Lesnar.

Meltzer reports that the change was put into place prior to Fastlane. Whether it was the chemistry between Lesnar and Ambrose or lack thereof between he and Wyatt, something prompted a change. The decision certainly deviates from most years where Vince remains locked into his Mania matches months in advance.

The upside here is that fans will get a more exciting match. The match has the potential to be a lot of fun. Ambrose’s recent work has likely earned him the bump to one of the top spots. What this does say is that the company believes in Ambrose in the long term. It has been frustrating to watch the start-stop Ambrose pushes, but this new booking would at least indicate that the company has big plans for him even after the roster fills back up with guys coming off of the disabled list.

Unfortunately the damage to Ambrose cannot be undone. Ambrose has been marginalized for the past year by the company. Perception is reality and while scrappy, the company has portrayed Ambrose as a guy that can’t win the big one. Casual fans may see this as more of a glorified squash as opposed to Bray vs. Brock. This is could be another case of the company changing their mindset on a guy that may come too late.

I don’t think anyone is expecting Ambrose to defeat Lesnar. Most fans speculate that the next guy to beat Lesnar will be Reigns and rightfully so if you are making him the franchise player of the future. With that mindset, the company has several weeks to change the narrative and turn Ambrose into a guy with a chance. How they get that done is a big question, but that needs to be a top priority to make this thing work.

I always felt that the company should have went with an Ambrose vs. Lesnar match about a year and a half ago when Brock was WWE champion. Ambrose still has not been beaten as badly and was seen as a guy that could potentially win the big one. I thought he would have made for a real interesting challenger to Lesnar at the time. Nonetheless, better now than ever I guess.

This also leads to speculation that Ambrose will be turning heel shortly after WrestleMania. Ambrose would likely be a big opponent for Reigns. But, we have seen Ambrose lose multiple times to Seth Rollins when challenging for the title. He already lost to Reigns at Survivor Series. I am not saying that he should beat Brock, but Ambrose vs. Reigns for the title would have a heck of a lot more juice if he did, even if tainted.
