Bellator 53 Results & Recap – Saunders & Lima Advance

Bellator 53 resultsBellator 53 took place in Miami, Oklahoma and the main event was the semi-finals of the welterweight tournament. As expected in a MMA fights when you have two fighters that specialize in Muay Thai you get a ground game.

Ben Saunders defeats Luis Santos 3rd round submission:

Like the Villa vs. Warren fight a fight that featured two accomplished wrestlers deciding to instead slug it out. This was the case as this fight took place on the ground as Saunders was taken down by Luis Santos and from his back Saunders attempted many submission attempts but to Santos credit was able to thwart most of the attempts. The end came in the 3rd round as Saunders secured a keylock and torque the arm forcing a tap.

Douglas Lima defeats Chris Lozano 2nd rd ko:

Lima has proven to be one of the best young prospects in mma and proved in this fight against Lozano he can flat out punch as well. Lima maintained the distance and when Lozano would come in with his head down he would hit him with an uppercut. The end for Lozano would come in the second rd as he would miss with a left hook but come back with a right hand that would knock Lozano out cold and make a statement that Lima is a force to be reckoned with. It should be an interesting final as Lima and Saunders have similar ground skills in Jiujitsu and standing I give an edge to Saunders only because I feel Lima has a weak chin. Should make for a great final.

Ronnie Mann defeats Kenny Foster 1st rd submission:

These two have stated that in the past they were not as aggressive as they should have been and wanted to start quick in this fight and they did as Mann came charging toward foster he was met with a head kick which was blocke3d. The two battled in the clinch and Foster was able to take Mann down but Mann proved to be effective on the ground and continued to threaten with submission attempts the end would come as Mann would get a triangle and the submission victory as Mann now moves on to the next Bellator featherweight tournament.

Thiago Santos defeats Josh Burns 1strd submission:

Santos was supposed to be in the heavyweight tournament but visa issues prevented him from participating. Mike Hayes fractured an orbital bone and may not be able to compete in the heavyweight semi finals. So this bout is a replacement bout in the event Hayes is unable to continue. Santos would get a rear naked choke submission over Burns.

Givas Santana defeats Darryl Cobb 1strd submission:

Santana is one of the best bjj practitioners in the world and has long been in my opinion one of the best fighters not fighting for a major mix martial arts promotion. Santana would get a takedown and move to side control and would work for the armbar as Cobb attempted to slam Santana, he was able to get full control of the hold and coax a tapout from Cobb. Santana should be in the next Bellator middleweight tournament.
