After considerable anticipation and over six months after he was named as Belgium’s envoy in Turin, Jérémie Makiese will sing ‘Miss You’ on the famous Pala Alpitour platform in May.
After conquering The Voice Belgium in 2021, Jérémie, a 21-year-old Antwerp native of Congolese descent, shot to prominence. This year’s winner of the ninth season of the francophone TV talent contest is also an accomplished football player and a scholar of geology (he’s now taking a break from school to concentrate on his other abilities, however!).
‘Miss You,’ which debuted on VivaCité’s breakfast program ‘Le 8/9’ only moments earlier,, will be sung live on stage on April 9 at Eurovision in Concert in Amsterdam. Jérémie penned and performed his own song in addition to his beautiful voice. Described how hard he worked and how proud his parents were of their son’s accomplishments.
On Thursday, May 12th, Jérémie will participate in the second semi-final of the competition.
Belgium will return to the Eurovision Song Contest for the 63rd time in 2022, more than six decades following its breakthrough in the first event in 1956. This is the first time since 1986 that a Belgian entry has taken home a trophy, and the nation has had a mixed record in the last ten competitions, with five misses in the Grand Final outpacing three top 10 finishes between 2015 and 2017. Last year, ‘The Wrong Place,’ by Hooverphonic, made it all the way to Saturday night, but it only received three televotes and finished 19th.
Who Is Jérémie Makiese?
Makiese was raised in Antwerp, Belgium, to Congolese parents. He now resides in the Uccle. A few years after, his family relocated to Berchem-Sainte-Agathe from Dilbeek, where he was raised with his three siblings, where he was able to study Dutch and French. He eventually found a place to call home in the Belgian city of Uccle.
As a child, Makiese began singing in a church chorus, then went on to take singing classes in school, where he participated in and won a talent show.
On 12 January last year, Makiese sang Labrinth’s “Jealous” for the ninth season of The Voice Belgique, including all four mentors devoting their attention to him. As it turned out, he opted to work with Beverly Jo Scott and her group.
Makiese defeated Astrid Cuylits in the Showdowns performing Lauren Daigle’s “You Say,” and he advanced to the live performances. He sang “You’re Nobody ’til Somebody Loves You” by James Arthur onstage. The mentor intervened to rescue him, and he went through to the next stage.
“Say Something” advanced him into the semi-finals, where he sang Bruno Mars’ “Leave the Door Open” for victory. He then made it to the championship round. He won the season after performing three tracks in the final “Earth Song,” “Revival,” and “Jealous” (with Beverly Jo Scott).
