Anderson Silva taps Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 Silva vs. Sonnen

Anderson SilvaThe Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen UFC 117 result went probably as you expected, but not the fight. Anderson Silva defeated Chael Sonnen in Round 5 to retain the UFC middleweight title. Anderson Silva was brutalized for four and half rounds and pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in UFC history.

The hype for this UFC 117 main event went well beyond expectations, all thanks to Chael Sonnen. Chael Sonnen talked one of the most lopsided matches on paper into a fight that has had the MMA community talking for weeks. If this was pro wrestling, Chael Sonnen would have won and become the next big star of the WWE. While nothing is predetermined in the UFC like the WWE, I think most MMA fans could have predicted this result before and after Chael Sonnen started trash talking. Yet this fight was anything but predictable.

Chael Sonnen was just fantastic tonight. Sonnen slaughtered Silva for five rounds with vicious ground and pound and striking. Sonnen caught Silva early in Round 1 and just continued to dominate. Silva would start consecutive rounds on the attack only to be stopped by Sonnen. Silva came close a few times to pulling off a comeback but Sonnen just never stopped coming for five rounds. Chael Sonnen made a brief mistake in the final round, caught himself in a triangle, and tapped to the champion. Sonnen had won all four rounds going into the final round and was just a few minutes from pulling off the upset. This is the kind of fight that gives you chills.

The fight was about as one-sided as the UFC 117 odds indicated it would be. The only difference was that it was Chael Sonnen dominating. Sonnen was just brutal, but Anderson Silva never stopped coming. Silva is just not human. The punishment he took would have killed a regular man. At one point Sonnen was slapping the temple of Silva with open hands and yet Silva hung on. Silva could barely even walk as he left the octagon. Silva put on the gutsiest performance you will ever see in combat sports.

Chael Sonnen probably talked himself into becoming a UFC superstar in the pre-fight build to UFC 117. Sonnen’s promos were taken directly out of pro wrestling to the point where you close your eyes and you think you are listening to old school Roddy Piper. Sonnen backed it up with one of the legendary fights of all time. Chael Sonnen isn’t going away and a rematch between these two will be one of the biggest fights in UFC history.

Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort is likely next in The Spider’s future. Silva vs. Belfort has been canceled several times due to injuries from both men. Dana White has said several times that Vitor Belfort would be next in line for the UFC middleweight title (which is almost a disgrace). That will be a very intriguing fight. It is obvious that anyone who beats Anderson Silva is going to have to match his speed. Belfort can definitely match his speed if it turns into a striking game. He could be a very dangerous opponent for the middleweight champion.

Chael Sonnen hinted at retirement following the fight. Like him or not, the UFC would be a lot less interesting without Chael Sonnen running his mouth.

In other UFC 117 results – Matt Hughes pulled off a tremendous upset with a submission win over Ricardo Almeida. Roy Nelson and Junior dos Santos went three exciting rounds that wound up going to Santos. Jon Fitch dominated Thiago Alves for three rounds. Fitch is scheduled to face the winner of GSP vs. Josh Koshcheck while JDS will face the winner of Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez or should we just say Brock Lesnar.
