WWE Wrestler of the Week: December 13th – 19th, 2013

Welcome to the 53rd edition of WWE Wrestler of the Week, the first one in which WWE only has one World Champion. With that being said, I think it is only right that the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton is this week’s winner of the prestigious award. Not only did Orton defeat the face of WWE, John Cena, but he did so without any controversy.

Before we discuss Orton’s latest accomplishments, two other champions had fantastic weeks. Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston was successful against Damien Sandow at WWE TLC and in tag action on Raw alongside Mark Henry. I think Langston and Henry are a great compliment to the up and coming tag team division.

They also remind me of Uncle Phil and Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but I do have one concern. What exactly is Langston’s gimmick? He speaks well and has had some funny moments, but that’s not enough. Someone recently asked why there aren’t any Langston shirts or merchandise. I realized that WWE sells items with Superstars’ gimmicks or catchphrases on them. What is Langston’s catchphrase? Answer: he doesn’t have one.

WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee continues to be unstoppable in the division against any and all Total Divas as she scored two victories this week. She and Tamina defeated the Bellas on SmackDown, Natalya at TLC and in six diva tag action on Raw. AJ certainly deserves this long reign as champion, as I don’t think we have had someone in the division with the total package AJ has since Trish Stratus. It’s even more impressive that AJ has remained champion through the high ratings Total Divas receives.

While AJ and Big E continue their championship reigns, Randy Orton has become the champion of champions this week. The match between Orton and Cena was not what I expected. It was surprising not to see the Authority get involved. At the very least, I was surprised that one person won. I would have bet money that the match was going to end in a draw. Nonetheless, WWE is clearly pushing Orton as the top heel of the company, but now they have two top babyfaces.

On Raw, John Cena pushed for Orton to compete less than 24 hours after their match at TLC. Orton refused to give Cena his rematch so soon, but the former World Heavyweight Champion instead nominated Daniel Bryan to be the challenger on Monday. Although I am never excited to see yet another Orton versus Bryan match, it’s good to see that he may have a chance to return to the title picture.

With Royal Rumble a number of weeks away, we don’t know who will challenge Orton for the WWE World Heavyweight title at the pay-per-view. Best case scenario? A triple threat that allows both Cena and Bryan to be the challengers. Worst case scenario? Another Cena versus Orton match that would allow Bryan to potentially win the rumble match.

Although Orton lost to Bryan by disqualification on Raw, he attacked the American Dragon and Cena. This resulted in the WWE World Heavyweight Champion to be standing over the two potential challengers as Raw went off the air. Orton will continue to stand tall until Cena, Bryan or another superstar (CM Punk?) can stop him.

Who do you think deserves WWE Wrestler of the Week this week? Who will challenge Randy Orton for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Royal Rumble? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below or tweet me @sethmikey
