Updated: WWE TLC 2013 Preview and Predictions

This Sunday, live from Houston, Texas is the fifth annual edition of WWE’s Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view. The event is highlighted by the unification TLC match between WWE Champion Randy Orton and World Heavyweight Champion John Cena. I, for one, was happy to see Cena win the world title in hopes that there would be unification. However, seeing it at a B level pay-per-view certainly raises some questions. There are only six matches announced for the event, including the pre-show. There could very well be an impromptu match between Brodus Clay and Xavier Woods, but I will only break down the already announced contests.

Pre-Show: Dolph Ziggler vs. Fandango

Dolph Ziggler has seemingly taken over the title of Mr. Pre-Show over the Miz lately as he hasn’t been used in any important storylines since losing the World Heavyweight title back in June. He lost the number one contender’s match for the Intercontinental title to Damien Sandow and is now on the pre-show against another filler wrestler in Fandango. The fact that neither is being pushed currently makes it difficult to make a prediction, but at the same time even care about this match. I would have preferred to see Ziggler vs. Sandow with the winner facing Big E Langston later in the night. With that said, I hope to see Ziggler win this one as he is considered a much higher level talent as Fandango.

Prediction: Dolph Ziggler wins

Intercontinental Championship: Big E Langston © vs. Damien Sandow

I love this match because I see it as a future world championship feud. Langston and Sandow are among the new breed in WWE who are up and coming. Thus, it makes perfect sense for them to feud over the midcard title.

It seems too early for Langston to lose the title, however this feud should continue. Sandow is gold on the mic and after losing Money in the Bank, deserves a huge push. Both are underrated and would be very entertaining to watch. Plus, the feud can do so much more with extended time. Because of all this, I think Langston retains or ends in controversy in order for the feud to continue.

Prediction: Big E Langston retains, but match ends by disqualification or count-out

Divas Championship: AJ Lee © vs. Natalya

This is the most difficult Divas title match to predict in quite some time. With the success of Total Divas and the talent of Natalya, AJ must be concerned. At the same time, there are Total Divas who have not earned an opportunity at the title yet. Nikki Bella being one of them. This could be because WWE plans on giving them a title shot in the future or they don’t see these Divas as contenders. As much as I think AJ is the Bret Hart of the divas division (Sorry Nattie), Natalya is the best choice to unseat her as champion. Perhaps Natalya wins it here, only to have AJ regain the title down the road. I am also waiting for a Shawn Michaels-Diesel like dissention between AJ and Tamina.

Prediction: Natalya wins the Divas Championship

WWE Tag Team Champions Goldust & Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio & Big Show vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel vs. The Real Americans (Fatal 4-Way Match)

A late addition to the card, Goldust and Cody Rhodes will defend the tag titles against the Real Americans, Rybaxel and the new team of Rey Mysterio and Big Show. The Rhodes brothers have been a great team since defeating the Shield a few months ago. Is it time for their reign to end? I don’t think so. I see Cody eventually turning heel again by attacking Goldust, which will lead to their WrestleMania match finally happening. Of these other three teams though, I am actually most intrigued by Mysterio and Big Show. At this point in their careers, I like them as a tag team. They remind me of Jeri-Show when Chris Jericho and Big Show teamed up as a successful pair. Show and Mysterio will not go very far in singles competition anymore, but perhaps they will be the ones to eventually dethrone the Rhodes.

Prediction: The Rhodes brothers retain

CM Punk vs. The Shield (3 on 1 Handicap Match)

I don’t know about everyone else, but I am not too excited or intrigued by the two 3-on-1 handicap matches at this pay-per-view. Then again, WWE must have something up its sleeve to pin CM Punk and Daniel Bryan in these David and Goliath type of matches. At least with Punk’s match, there seems to be a split between the Shield coming. We’ve seen it for weeks and it’s mainly between Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. Then again, maybe that’s just what WWE wants us to believe. That CM Punk will win the match after a miscommunication between Reigns and Ambrose. Punk has been defeating Ambrose in singles matches recently and that usually means he is not going to win on pay-per-view. Time to get your Shield merchandise while you still can because something is going to happen on Sunday that will dictate the future of the faction of the year.

Prediction: CM Punk wins after miscommunication between Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns

Daniel Bryan vs. The Wyatt Family (3 on 1 Handicap Match)

The storyline happening in this handicap match involves the Wyatt Family trying to get Daniel Bryan to join them in following the buzzards. There won’t be any miscommunication between the Wyatt Family and I don’t know who will ultimately win the match, but I do have one prediction. The Wyatt Family will leave WITH Daniel Bryan whether he likes it or not. Bryan most likely won’t join the Family, but the Wyatts will abduct him again and hopefully this time WWE doesn’t just give a lame excuse about where Bryan went.

Prediction: The Wyatt Family wins and abducts Daniel Bryan

WWE Unification Championship Match: WWE Champion Randy Orton vs. World Heavyweight Champion John Cena

As I discussed in the intro to my predictions, I was looking forward to a unification match because I never saw any reason for two world champions. At least not when the brand extension ended. Like others I have talked with, I am not too thrilled about the match being between John Cena and Randy Orton, but that’s the least of the issues with this match. Triple H and WWE have made such a big deal about this match being epic and all that, but ignore the 2001 unification match that Chris Jericho won. Sure, WWE did repost their whole era of unification article, but none of it is mentioned on WWE television. It also bugs me that his match is happening at a B level pay-per-view instead of WrestleMania. Then again, perhaps this will allow the Royal Rumble show to help dictate the future of the world title. In fact, I don’t think this match ends cleanly. I think this match happens again at Royal Rumble.

How so?

Well, both world titles will be hanging. Cena will claim one of the belts and Orton will grab the other. They both fall and thus we still have two champions. This will certainly piss off Triple H as he is the one preaching for wanting just one world champion. He will have to make a rematch for Royal Rumble, which is a bigger show and a much better place to crown the one champion.

Prediction: Match ends in no contest.

While there may not be a lot of matches scheduled for the event, I am very torn on a lot of the outcomes. WWE sometimes has a way of surprising the fans. However, most recently it’s been more disappointing. Even if I am wrong with every one of these predictions, if I am surprised and WWE is creative with the outcomes, I will be satisfied. Believe it or not, but the road to WrestleMania is a lot closer than you think so perhaps it starts this Sunday.
