WWE Royal Rumble 2014 Predictions: Is This Year’s Winner Obvious?

January 20, 2014 By: Category: WWE | Pro Wrestling

WWE’s annual Royal Rumble pay-per-view is approaching and just like every year, people are making predictions as to who will win the special rumble match. The winner of the rumble earns a main event championship match at WrestleMania 30. There are always favorites to win the rumble match, which makes me wonder if WWE is going to go that route or fool the fans watching.

When I think of obvious past winners superstars like The Rock, Randy Orton and John Cena come to mind. The Rock won the rumble in 2000. Stone Cold Steve Austin was not on the card, while Triple H and Mick Foley were in the WWE title match that night. In 2009, Orton was the top heel and leader of the Legacy faction. The rumble came down to Orton, Legacy and Triple H. It was clear who was winning this match. And I am sure we all remember Cena’s victory last year in 2013. WWE fans had a feeling the company was going to set up a Cena-Rock rematch at WrestleMania 29.

Now, in terms of this year, who is the favorite? Who would be the obvious winner?

Yes, yes yes. I would have to say Daniel Bryan. Arguably the most popular superstar on the roster, Bryan has to be considered the favorite to win the rumble match this year. WWE and the Authority have been pushing Bryan down. They don’t want Bryan as champion. They don’t see Bryan as champion. He might be seen as a “vanilla midget.” Bryan was demoted to a feud with the Wyatt Family after chasing the WWE title in August and September. Even after the demotion, Bryan’s feud with the Wyatts was much more interesting unifying or whatever WWE was doing with its world titles.

So wouldn’t it make sense for Bryan to win the rumble and get his big moment by winning the Royal Rumble match?

I think so. But not everyone does. *cough* Eric from Camel Clutch Blog *cough*

If Bryan doesn’t win the rumble, there is another option and that is Batista.

Eric is not the only one. Jay from ProWrestlingPowerhouse.com and I agree that if it’s not Bryan, it has to be Batista. The Animal is returning to WWE for the first time since 2010. WWE loves to put returning stars (The Rock, Brock Lesnar) in main event matches when they come back. Therefore, it does have a level of logic to it.

I could see Batista winning and facing either Brock Lesnar (if he wins at Elimination Chamber) or Orton for the WWE World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania 30.

If anyone other than Batista or Bryan wins the rumble match this year, WWE fans (including myself) will be shocked. Then again, it has happened before. John Cena or Edge returning from injury in 2008 and 2010, respectively are two examples of this. Perhaps Sheamus will return and win the rumble. But I doubt it.

On January 26th, we will find out if this year is obvious like 2000, 2009 and last year. Or maybe it will be like 2008 or 2010 with a returning star winning. Or perhaps WWE has something else up their sleeve. Bottom line is if Bryan wins, I won’t complain, but it will make this year’s winner an obvious one.
