Bruno Sammartino elevated the WWE Hall of Fame to an all-new level this year. The inclusion of arguably the greatest world champion in company history created so much excitement that fans and even WWE superstars are already making predictions on the 2014 class.
Mick Foley called the 2013 class the best ever and while it may be, there is an opportunity to raise the stakes even more next year. There are plenty of pro wrestling legends out there deserving of the WWE’s highest honor. That is why I didn’t see the need to wait until next year to start making picks and recommendations for next year’s WrestleMania weekend ceremony.
“Macho Man” Randy Savage: I am going to go out on a limb here and predict that the Macho Man will finally take his place in the Hall of Fame. If the WWE can make a deal with Bruno Sammartino than anything is possible. I don’t know how it is going to work out with Lanny Poffo’s demands that the Poffo family go in but I have to think that Triple H will try and work something out. It appears that they are taking the Hall of Fame seriously. For that reason I truly believe that they will bring in the Macho King.
Owen Hart: The only thing holding up this induction was a lawsuit which has now been settled. Terms of the lawsuit have been undisclosed but I have to think that there was some kind of negotiation to induct Owen into the Hall of Fame. My gut tells me that this would have happened years ago if it were not for the legal issues between Owen’s estate and the World Wrestling Entertainment.
Rock and Roll Express: It still amazes me that these guys are not in the WWE Hall of Fame. They didn’t do a whole lot in the WWE but their accomplishments outside of the company really do deserve recognition. If you look back on their run it was actually quite short but for that short amount of time they were one of the hottest acts in the country. There is also the connection to New Orleans and the Mid South Wrestling promotion here that could tip the scales in the Rock and Rolls favor.
The Fabulous Freebirds: I am surprised that these guys haven’t taken their place inside of the Hall of Fame. I mean if the Vice President of the company can’t get in, who can? I’ll be honest. I was convinced that they were in and had to double check before I included them here. Like the Rock and Roll Express, they didn’t have any real success in the WWE but they certainly made their mark throughout the territories. Michael Hayes , Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts really helped create the rock and roll wrestling phenomenon and their feud with the Von Erichs in World Class is legendary. Again like the Rock and Rolls, there is also the tie in to the territory which should elevate their cause in 2014.
Lex Luger: Bridges were burnt badly between Lex Luger and the WWE when Lex made the infamous appearance on Nitro fresh off of his WWE contract. However it would appear that relations have been smoothed the last several years and it appears inevitable that the Total Package will take a spot in the Hall of Fame at some point. There is no real tie-in with New Orleans so maybe they hold him off until they go back to a WCW city.
Steve “Dr. Death” Williams: Doc is a tough one because WWE fans who watched him only in the WWE don’t truly understand how great this former UWF champion was. He was legendary in many ways and works out perfectly with the New Orleans/Mid South Wrestling connection. The man was one of the greatest workers of his time and while his exposure in the WWE came a little late, there is plenty of WCW and Mid South tape that the WWE can use to showcase Dr. Death.
Cyndi Lauper: We know a celebrity has to go in every year right? Why not give the celebrity that had the most impact on WrestleMania in WWE history a rightful spot in the Hall of Fame? I lived through that era and I don’t know if the WWE would have gotten the MTV exposure and public awareness if it weren’t for Cyndi Lauper. I was shocked she wasn’t even mentioned when WWE.com did a top 20 WrestleMania Celebrity piece. She came back for RAW which leads me to believe that she’d gladly make an appearance here if she was asked.
