Walker All That Remains Of AP All-American Team In Madness

March 31, 2011 By: Category: NCAA Basketball, Sports

Kemba Walker is looking for a big game against West Virginia tonight. It was no surprise that when the college basketball betting AP All-America team votes were counted, the hottest commodity in the game tallied the most votes. No single player received more recognition down the stretch than BYU Cougars’ star Jimmer Fredette, although there has been criticism about whether or not he deserved all of the attention he got.

There was no doubt that Fredette rose to the occasion for BYU in the absence of suspended forward Brandon Davies through postseason play. His 28.9 points per game was the best mark in the nation, and since the voting was done before the March Madness tournament his accomplishments in helping the Cougars to a Mountain West title must have factored heavily.

That said, as a senior Fredette is still unlikely to be a top-five pick in this year’s draft, and there are critics that question his ability to live up to expectations if a team makes him a first round pick. The college hoops’ world may very well have been “jimmered”, but there is a single player that was voted in to the All-America team that has helped his team remain alive in the NCAA national title tournament, and he definitely deserves recognition as one of the top players available in the coming NBA draft.

Kemba Walker of the Connecticut Huskies is in the Final Four, while the remainder of the class has already been eliminated. Duke guard and ACC MVP Nolan Smith average 21.3 points per game and over five assists in leading the Blue Devils to another conference title, while Jared Sullinger led the Ohio State Buckeyes to a Big Ten title and the top overall seed in this year’s Madness. Meanwhile, JaJuan Johnson was the key to the Purdue Boilermakers’ hopes this season, even if the team disappointed in postseason play. Including Fredette, all four men did their best but failed to get their teams to the Final Four, which makes it a lot easier to project which player it is that deserves recognition as the top talent available for the 2011 sports betting bonus draft.

Walker represents Connecticut’s first AP All-American since Emeka Okafor in 2004, and the fact that he played for the best team from the best conference in college ball is even more important to consider. The Huskies came alive under Walker to prevail in the Big East title tournament, and if they can go all the way in the national title tournament then that would be another major addition to his pay per head resume.

Head coach Jim Calhoun said that he felt Walker was more important to his team than any other player in college ball, and it went beyond the stats that he put up. The senior forward scored 23.5 points per game with 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists, but more importantly has led one of the youngest teams in the country. All five young men that were voted to the AP All-American team deserved to be there, but none has brighter prospects for the future than Walker, who is the only player who has kept his team alive in the national title tournament.

Wildcats Will Push Blue Devils To The Limit

March 23, 2011 By: Category: NCAA Basketball, Sports

Mason Plumlee and Miles Plumlee hope to keep the Blue Devils' home streak aliveMarch Madness betting players are getting ready for the Sweet 16 as the NCAA Tournament is coming off one of the craziest opening weekends in recent memory, but we’re sure that it’s only going to continue on Thursday as Arizona takes on Duke in the West region in Anaheim.

Arizona Duke Betting – Thursday, 9:45 PM ET

The fifth-seeded Wildcats almost lost an 11-point halftime lead, and needed a late three-point play by Derrick Williams to edge Texas 70-69. Williams, who stepped up with a big play at the end of the game for the second straight matchup, led the way with 17 points and nine boards, while Solomon Hill stepped up with 16 points and eight boards for the Wildcats, who hit eight of their 14 attempts from beyond the arc, while holding Texas to 3-of-11 from long range. Those who are keeping a March Madness blog have likely been keeping up on Williams, but now people on a national level are seeing why many think he is going to be the No.1 pick in the NBA draft.

The top-seeded Blue Devils were given all they could handle and more by a young and scrappy Michigan squad in a 73-71 win, powered by Nolan Smith’s 24 points. While all of the attention surrounded the returning Kyrie Irving, who had 11 points, but coach Mike Krzyzewski knows who got him to this point while Irving has been injured most of the season with an ailing toe. Smith is one of the three favorites for national Player of the Year, along with BYU’s Jimmer Fredette and Connecticut’s Kemba Walker, and once again, he came up big when it counted for Duke, who also did a good job defensively by holding Michigan’s three-point gunners to 7-of-21 from behind the line.

Even those checking out NBA scores will be watching this game, as it is a slow night in the pros, and they’ll be able to see a couple of players who should end up in the League. Duke is an 8.5-point favorite in their third meeting with the Wildcats, and the first two meetings were wins for the Blue Devils, an eight-point win in Tucson in 1997, and a 10-point victory in the 2001 national title game.

We think this will end up in a Duke win, but we’re betting on Arizona to push the Blue Devils. North Carolina and Florida State showed that Duke can be handled in the paint if you’re physical, and the Wildcats have the size to do this with Williams and Hill. The Blue Devils have a big edge on the perimeter with Smith, Irving and Seth Curry, but the Wildcats will keep it close with their inside advantage, so take Arizona to cover the sports betting spread.

College Basketball Betting – Huskies, Mountaineers Prepare For Big East Slugfest

March 02, 2011 By: Category: NCAA Basketball, Sports

Kemba Walker is looking for a big game against West Virginia tonight.March Madness betting players are watching one of the tightest Big East races in years, and that’s saying something when you consider that what the conference has been like in recent seasons. Two teams tied with the same record will clash in Morgantown on Wednesday night as Connecticut heads to West Virginia, and both are looking to head into the final weekend of the regular season on a high.

U Conn vs. West Virginia Betting – Wednesday, 7:00 PM ET

The No.16 Huskies (21-7, 9-7) got a big second half from Kemba Walker in a 67-59 win at Cincinnati, as their scoring leader notched 11 of his 16 points after the break. Jeremy Lamb was the high man with 17 points, while Shabazz Napier came off the bench to record 11 points and six assists for the Huskies, and it was clear that the Bearcats were planning to contain Walker, letting the rest of U Conn’s players get their points. But like teams looking for help at the NHL trade deadline, the Huskies know they need secondary scoring, and their guards stepped up to the plate in the first half, leaving Walker to close out the deal in the second.

The Mountaineers (18-10, 9-7) also pulled away from Rutgers, finishing with a 12-2 run to come away with a 65-54 win on the road. Darryl “Truck” Bryant led the way with 15 points, while John Flowers (14 points, 10 boards) and Kevin Jones (12 points, 11 boards) both add double-doubles for the Mountaineers, who out rebounded the Scarlet Knights 44-26. The Mountaineers only shot 39.6% from the field, but they held Rutgers to 33.9%, and you always know you’re going to get a physical game when you go up against a team coached by Bob Huggins.

Your pay per head sportsbook should favor the Mountaineers at home, even though they’re 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five meetings with the Huskies, who are 7-4 ATS on the road this season. The Mountaineers are 6-7 ATS in Morgantown ,but we think they will pull out the win on Wednesday night. In Bryant, Joe Mazzula and even Casey Mitchell, the Mountaineers have the size and physical ability to match up with the UConn guards, and they have the size to battle with the Huskies down low.

The Mountaineers are 6-1 SU in their last seven home games, and while they should make it into the NCAA Tournament comfortably, 10 wins in the Big East would essentially make it a certainty that they’ll be dancing. The Huskies have had some off-field distractions in recent weeks, especially the recruiting violations, so focus could be a problem in a hostile environment. We’re taking West Virginia in our online sports betting picks.
