What would you do if you just won the Super Bowl? If you are Aaron Rodgers you go to the David Letterman Show. If you are Clay Matthews you not only go to WWE SmackDown but you get a 24-hour license to become a pro wrestling referee and spoil the day for Vickie Guerrero.
AP Defensive Player of the Year runner up and brand new Super Bowl champion, Clay Matthews and the Green Bay Packers continued their post game celebration by attending a SmackDown taping in Green Bay Tuesday night. The Packers and their families were treated like royalty by the WWE. Matthews even got to be a part of the show in the biggest angle of the night.
This is a huge deal for the WWE and tremendous foresight to get a building in Green Bay two days after the Super Bowl. You have to give the WWE a ton of credit for being on top of the Super Bowl and capitalizing on the publicity. They have Aaron Rodgers wearing their championship belt in front of 100+ million people and will now have arguably the second most popular Packer on their television show Friday night involved in a wrestling angle. Big props go out to the marketing department at Titan Towers.
I also give Clay Matthews and the Packers a ton of credit. With a lockout looming it is risky for any of these guys to take any unnecessary physical chances now more than ever. Not that what Matthews was doing was dangerous but what if he tore a ligament, screwed up his knee, injured his shoulder, etc with the run-in and the count? It isn’t likely but it also is a possibility. I am sure the Packers had to sign off on it as well. Pac Man Jones was blocked by the Tennessee Titans a few years back from doing anything physical at all when he appeared in TNA Wrestling.
SmackDown airs Friday nights at 8 PM/EST on the SyFy Channel.
