As we close out wrestling for 2012 and welcome the year 2013 I thought it would be pretty fun to make some “bold predictions” for the WWE for the upcoming year. These predictions range from who could be turning heel or face, which wrestlers may make the climb as first time World Champions and who could be signed or even return to the WWE. Let’s close out 2012 by looking ahead in what could happen in 2013 with the final blog of my three part series!
NXT will start to look more like a top Independent wrestling promotion:
CM Punk and Daniel Bryan really changed the way WWE viewed their developmental program as these guys were already built to be stars in the company based off of the time they worked hard on the independent wrestling circuit. Those two stars, and with the help of Triple H believing more in independent wrestling talent, we have seen an influx of “indy stars” being signed by the WWE. Claudio Castagnoli (Antonio Cesaro), Jon Moxley, (Dean Amrbose), Tyler Black (Seth Rollins), Chris Hero (Kassius Ohno), Brodie Lee (Luke Harper) and PAC (Adrian Neville) are indy veterans who have all have gone through development or are currently in developmental.
I fully expect this trend to continue in 2013 and see some more “indy” stars make their way into the WWE developmental system. Due in part to that new philosophy WWE has, I expect the future of this company to be very bright in the next 5 years.
AJ Lee will become a household name/face of the WWE Divas:
AJ Lee had a breakout year in 2012 and is poised to ascend to a higher level of notoriety in 2013. She was one of those stars that no one saw coming and hasn’t needed to hold a WWE Divas Championship to showcase her importance to the Diva division in World Wrestling Entertainment. In my opinion she is the 2013 version of a Miss Elizabeth, a beautiful and innocent wrestling persona that fans love seeing on a weekly basis.
Look for AJ Lee to receive more notoriety on a national level to the point where she is a recognizable name even to the casual wrestling fan. The WWE has looked for someone to carry the weight of the WWE Divas divsion for sometime and it appears that AJ Lee will be that “bridge” from Sunny to Sable to Trish/Lita and to AJ Lee. I don’t know if the WWE knew what they were doing when they gave AJ Lee the ball to run with but I am sure glad they did in 2012.
Jeff Hardy will return to the WWE:
This could be one of the worst kept secrets in professional wrestling right now. The current TNA World Champion Jeff Hardy has made it pretty clear to the “dirtsheets” that he would like one last run in the WWE. I’m sure that is something TNA will try very hard to prevent in the first part of 2013 as they clearly have already tried by giving Jeff the TNA World Title.
Recently Jeff’s brother Matt Hardy said that there is a “very good chance” a Hardy Boys reunion happens in 2013. The only problem for TNA was that Matt said it would happen in the WWE. I fully expect Hardy to be back with the WWE at some point in 2013 and it wouldn’t shock me if we got a continuation of the feud with CM Punk from when he left the company back in 2009.
Vince McMahon will announce his retirement to happen at WrestleMania 30:
This is probably the boldest prediction I have made the last two years I have done these blogs. Reason being is because Vince McMahon is the WWE and the WWE is Vince McMahon. Say what you will about the man but all the entertainment and joy we have received from professional wrestling the last 30 years plus are thanks to this man.
In recent years we have heard that there has been a “changing of the guard” between Vince McMahon and Triple H in regards to the day-to-day operations of World Wrestling Entertainment. Triple H is the successor to Vince McMahon’s throne and it’s only a matter of time for the change to be complete. I believe that 2013 will be Vince McMahon’s last full year in that role and he will “go out in style” by retiring at WrestleMania 30.
